Default SNAP 520 and JBOD arrays

Has anyone experimented with using some other PCI-X SAS HBA card other than the specific Adaptec card? Has anyone tried using a JBOD SAS/SATA array, other than the S50 or Xpansion 100? Just wondering if it's possible to use another vendor's card and/or a different manufacturer's array.
