iHelix Imagesite...
Sup all
If you've visited the Cool Cases forum you've probably noticed the sticky at the top about large image hosting... thats the iHelix imagesite. It says its down, thats old. And somehow I lost my account so now I have no moderator access to unlock the post and my new acct cant edit it (which is OK, I'm inactive now anyway, I'm not cool enough for a mod panel) . The last few days I've heard some people saying it wasn't working, this is probably due to some router issue my ISP was having and is hopefully fixed now. For anyone that doesnt know, right now its an anonymous FTP server with certain permissions (anyone can create files or folders, but not rename or delete anything) that also works as a HTTP server so IMG tags can reference files under it, and its contents can be browsed by folder. This gives (or so the idea was) users a moderately useful place to dump their images for use on the forum and showing off to friends. Lately I've been going thru stuff on my server, basic spring cleaning type stuff; moving stuff that needs keeping to an offsite server I now own which is probably somewhat similar to the one serving you this mindless drivel I attempt to pass off as a somewhat useful poll/post. In any case it has much more bandwidth than I do hosting imagesite off my cable connection. So here are the options (and as always if you have a better one I'd love to hear it): 1. I can keep it the way it is, set similar permissions on the new server and keep it the way it is. You might have to log into the ftp as anonymous@imagesite.ihelix.net or something, dont know if true anonymous access will stay. 2. I can set up an anonymous uploader script similar to this one. The advantage is it would be very easy and fast to upload files, the disadvantage is it all piles together, no separate folders for each user. 3. I can set up an uploader with logins, each user would register a login and password where then they could upload their stuff. It then would probably be posted in a format similar to the current HTTP server (if you knwo the folder name you can browse it) 4. I can take it down entirely. This probably wont happen, cuz when it does go down I usually get a few ICQs telling me its borked, which means at least somebody is using it. So anyway vote in the poll, lemme know if you think its useful and what you want for it in the future. Suggestions are welcome, if you have a better idea than what i posted please share it.

I like the idea of having a login/password, cut's down on chances of abuse?, could make it a protocal that users name their folders with their Forum~names, then it'd be easy for other peeps to find/browse it, does it work like that?, one main folder for each user? then sub folders as you like...

yeah right now thats the way its supposed to work, and while I prohibit porn, and yeah its possible to UL into someone elses folder I havent gotten any complaints of abuse. Actually I'm kinda bored, I just went through the whole thing and found only one image that needed deleting. And its been up for like a year. Which speaks very well for this forum, if I put something like that up on many other forums it would rapidly become porn central.
Yeah right now the idea is that a user makes a folder with his/her/its forum name and puts their stuff under it. Anyway I'm not too worried about abuse ATM, if there were logins it would be so users could rename and delete their stuff which they cant right now. And wow, it seems people like cookies alot more than Imagesite...

Aside from logins, do you prefer the ftp interface or would you rather have a web based thing? Web based means you probably wouldnt be able to make folders or upload more than one file at a time but we'll see.
Right now what I'm thinking is keep it like it is but have some kind of login thing that lets people log in and just access their folder, good idea?

Personally, I FAR prefer the FTP login: it's nice and easy.

It's a great service IronHelix. Thanks! Keep it up. As for the interface, I don't have a good opinion since I can use my AT&T homepage for image hosting if I ever need it.
