Can anyone recomend a small compact FTP proggie?, a freebie!!. also how about a file converter for changing JPG's to GIF's?. BB suggested MS photo editor, but I'd prefer a stand alone converter if their is one?, I found one once (and lost it!) but it was DOS based and beyond my ken

Do you want a FTP client or Server?
If client then I can very much recomend LeechFTP it's an old program writen by some german guy (you some times get msg boxes in german ![]() If you want a FTP server, the best free server I have found is CesarFTP, it's a small tight FTP server which can be run as a service on NT/2K/XP comp. This program can also be found at download.com Link If the links don't work just do a search on download.com for the programs Hope this gets you there.... btw. you can propably also find a free jpg2gif converter at download.com, if you look hard enough. |

as far as ftp goes, i'm generally quite happy with WS_FTP_LE. it's fairly small, and simple to use windows-based ftp.
when you install it though, it asks you the type of user you are (grants wether you get full LE or not), but i'm sure you can figure that one out. you can download it from www.ipswitch.com never used ws pro. as far as ftp servers, i use FreeBSD, so all that's nicely built in. ![]() for *really* simple tho, IE has a fairly decent built-in ftp, the only problem is the passwords are stored in IE's history, which kinda sucks unless you have a good cleaner. to log into a site with a pwd, just click File->Login As after connecting to remote host (an error will popup first and you'll get a blank page). |

for image conversion I really like irfanview32. Tiny, intuitive, and free.
For free win32 ftp clients, you might wanna try ftp explorer. Nowadays I just use XP's "My network places" |

I do all of my photo stuff in mspaint.. and sometimes a little photoshop , most windows boxes already have the jpg and gif filters installed and can do conversions , if you can't save as gif or jpg in mspaint , find the filter and install it in your system folder and add the mask to your registry, there are articles everywhere for it , As for serving ftp , if you are running 2k or xp , they both have built in ftp services that aren't so bad. If you don't want to use them or are running 98 , i'd suggest Serv-U FTP , if you wanna access ftp sites , cuteFTP has always been my favorite , if your trial runs out just set your clock back and run it and leave it running , everytime you reboot , set your clock back to when it was workign , launch it then set clock back to real time , i'tll stay running.. =)
