Default copper shims....for wimps or do they actually help?

i read somewhere that the use of a copper shim is for wimps...ie for people that don't know how to attach a hsf properly :P
Seeing as i've already chipped the corner of my 1.2tbird, i must be one of those people..the cpu runs fine btw.
However...i was reading somewhere...(i'm at work so i don't have the link at hand)...that copper shims can actually help dissipate some heat from the die and drop your temps by 4-8C. If they are too thick they can also fry your cpu.
Any truth to this from those of you who know?

NO they do NOT help

Cu Shims are like training wheels for OC'rs, but in this case there more likely to contribute to you killing your CPU then anything

What do you do about the air space between the die and the copper plate...can't that space form condensation on the die and the copper block if not sealed and you cool your cpu too much? Do you seal the copper plate to the cpu with silicone?
