I have a d-link Di 614+ wireless router, it's b, and I'm just not quite getting the signal strength I need to use it all the time. I was wondering if there were any mods I could do to the antenna that could boost my strength. and if not if going oout and buying a different antenna could help.
I can get my strength to a decent point ~80%, but I have to put it in the middle of the halway, and I really don't want it gettin steped on in the middle of the night. thanks for any help |

Don't rule out your wireless card in your laptop or desktop. This is often an overlooked problem of wireless connections. Most off the shelf cards (Linksys,D-link) etc. have pretty crappy performance. For example, I setup a wireless lan for my neighbor using a great antenna I made ( antenna ). This antenna put out about 15db of gain, compaired to most stock antenna at 2 - 5 db if your lucky. Even with this antenna, he was unable to get a good signal throught his house in the areas he needed. I put one of my Orinoco PCMCIA cards in his laptop, and the signal strength increased dramaticly. He is now able to use his laptop anywhere in his house. We are also able to pickup his signal across the street, and 4 houses down.
With wireless eguipment, you get what you pay for. Orinoco cards have come way down in price, but are amoung the best cards available. If you just want to purchase and antenna try here: Hyperlink you need to determine the type of connector your AP uses and you should be able to find the correct pigtails at Hypertech. Fab Corp also sells some good wireless equipment: Fab-corp |

yeah, I might do that if I can't get it to work, but I ended up messing around with it for an hour or so this afternoon, and got my strength up to 80% from 60 and i can actually get decent speeds, it's just annoying because it serious less then 25ft away.. just 2 8in solid concret walls in the way.
thaks for the replys I might make an antenna just for the hell of it and see if I get an increased preformance.. if not we'll see. I wasn't excpecting miricles, I spent less then $30 on the router and card, so no huge loss. |

http://www.netgate.com has some nifty aftermarket antennas for access points and such. They also have some pretty spiffy PCMCIA cards that have an antenna lead dongle you can hook up to an external antanna to improve range. Does you notebook use a PCMCIA wireless card or mini-PCI?

actually in my desktop, d-link dwl-520+ it's the matching pci card to the router
edit: damn most of those anntena's are almost as much as I paid for the router (which wasn't much) |

The antennas they use suck. Get yourself a nice high amplification omni antenna and you'll do okay. The rear plugs on the 614 are a standard type ... I forget the type, though many places will fit the proper connector on the antenna for a nominal fee.

we use d-links at my shop, and honestly, they're pretty crappy in general. you really need to watch out on them, because the hole the antenna screws into breaks pretty easily. it'll just float its way into the router, and you have to take the whole thing apart to find it, then you realize the part that was holding it on broke completely. then you order a new one at warehouse cost
