ECC RAM...

Hey guys, I'm pretty much a n00b with all this techno stuff but I have a simple little question for you all.. What is ECC RAM? A few days ago I accidently ordered a 256MB ECC SDRAM instead of the normal 256mb SDRAM stick and I was wondering whats the difference between the two and if I could just use that on my "Asus A7V133 AMD Socket A KT133A ATA 100 ATX" motherboard instead of having to go through all that trouble of exchanging the ECC memory. I'd really apreciate the help. Thank you

don't worry your self, it's error correcting ram,for it to do it's job you must use all ecc ram in your system.it will work with regular ram but just wont error correct.a way to tell if ram is ecc is to count the chips on it, even number= non ecc odd number = ecc. the extra chip does the error correcting.

BTW, I noticed two numbers in the name of this ECC ram, 16x8. I have no idea exactly what it means but it can't be good if it's that low (i noticed some SDRAM's have 16x72 or 32x64). Could you tell me if I should exchange the RAM because of this?

as far as speed ,I am not sure what is better the ecc or non ecc. but yes it is said to be better

Check your mobo manual to see if it supports it, some don't

ECC (Error Correction Control) memory is primarily designed for server operations, but now can be used in desktop PC boxes (as long as mother moard supports it).
If your mobo do not support this feature, don't worry, ECC simply won't do it's purpose, but the memory will work fine.

YET! You should know that in general ECC memory will cause a DELAY in overal performance. Average delay is not that big though, around 2-3%.

If you need learn more about memory stuff, go to Crucial site, they have a ton of very interesting and well written information regarding RAM.
