I just went through MBM, Speedfan, Sandra and another one that I deleted and they all told me 32C. So with that I am ok with everything. It isn't 15C, but I'm not in it for the Mhz so this is acceptable. In regards to the pipes, I have taken every step to keep from introducing stress onto the lines, so I'm not worried about it. The case closes and there are no changes in CPU temperature.
Thanks for the heads up on the design features-- I might make use of them laterm but for now it's rest time. And I'ld like to know what temps you're running at. |

glad to hear things are better... 32C is respectable.... high for a PIII, but ok.. 44c is way too high for a PIII. (I'm assuming 32C was the highest of the four temps reported by speedfan...) Just curious, what changed? Why'd it drop? was it just a software glitch?
I'm running an athlon 1333 @ 1466 (multiplier adjustment). my core voltage reads 1.83v, but I didn't change it. Don't quite understand. (stock FSB... for some reason it crashes if I change it, and I haven't had time to tweak. This mobos defective, got a replacement on the way. ...gigabyte GA-7DXR) Eheim 1250 1/2" hose w/ 5/8" fittings, except for 1/2" on block. Maze 3 bigass econoline heater core, cooled by a 172mm comair rotron 24v fan @ 9-12v. with all fans running at max, 32C idle with rad fan at about 9v, and other fans min, 37C idle Bear in mind that I have only got a slow 80mm intake... I used to have nothing for intake. When I put it in, my temps dropped 2C. ![]() ![]()

Tell you the truth, I have *no* idea what was up with that. It's strange that the 44 reading only came from the BIOS...
I can't imagine how loud your setup is. Do you get headaches often? ![]() I think next time I design a system from the ground up I too am going to go with the 1/2" on the blocks. And to think I almost built the CPU block.... uhhhh what a nightmare that would have been... |

Actually, it's not too loud. The PSU fans are under my control..
![]() The 2 IBM 60gxp HDs are the loudest part... they make a high pitched whine that phases in and out... super annoying. Sometimes I turn up all of fans just to drown out the HDs. Also, the comair fan is right next to my foot, not far from my ear. I cut away the case around it, so there's nothing between me and it. I've got to move my case farther away.

jesus, man, I would love to get a dB reading on that one.
I too have two GXP's, but that silent drive is definitely taking care of the noise! Now all I have to deal with is the powersupply fan and I will be 100% fanless!!!! mwa ha. |

easy. pull the cover off of the power supply, and unplug the PSU fans from the circuit board. Clip the connector off, and add a length of wire. Attach a rheostat or a 7/off/12v switch and you're all set. That's what I did.
disclaimer... if you fry, tough. ![]() so the silent drives silenced the HDs? totally?

not totally, but they did quiet it down ALOT! The loudest thing in the room right now is my monitor-- there's this gentle buzzing that I can hear, but I can't stck a waterblock on it to fix it.
![]() But, yeah, that's how quiet it is. Still not quiet enough for me though... The thing about the silent drives is that they definitely WERE NOT designed with thermal dissapation in mind, so that's why I built the two HD blocks. The way the heat gets out of the enclosure is by way of the rack rails, supposidly transferring heat onto the case itself, but it didn't do a good job of that AT ALL and the bay just got really, i mean really, hot. so I cut out holes in the bay and epoxied those blocks onto the enclosure rails and now it is nice and chilly. ![]() So about the PSU thing... what exactly do you mean? Did you remote the PSU? Or are you saying that you put a rheo on the PSU fan? I'm not afraid of wires, I've actually switched around the fan on that thing quiet a bit, but it's pretty quiet right now and I don't think rpm control is going to do a whole lot of good. Actually, this makes me think about remoting the PSU... hadn't ever occured to me. The spackle job I did to put the tubes through the wall was kind of half assed because the stuff I used was kind of dry, so maybe I can do this.... hmmm.... I want to silence my HD's, but I don't want to spent $33 each for my 2 disks. I want to build my own enclosure. Any suggestions regarding suitable materials (types of sound dampening foam, etc.).
Also, how do you built waterblocks for HDs? any links or pics would be great.

ps. PSU fans... I put the switch on the front bezel of my pc.. I just added an appropriate length of wire to the fan leads. Now they are powered off of a 12v rail, rather than from w/in the PSU. The same proc. as putting a case fan in the psu, and mounting the fan controls on the front.

In terms of suggesting materials, you are on your own. But I will tell you how it is constructed so you might build your own (though in the end it might end up to be the same price...
![]() The housing is simply a plastic box, as tall as a CD drive and about 1/2-3/4" narrower on each side. on the inside is a thin, maybe 1/8", sheet of foam, completely moveable. Then inserted into the housing and touching very firmly against the drive are two sheets of metal, one on top, one below, and each exit the case on seperate sides. These serve as the rail attachments and as a (crappy) heat transfer. They don't do a very good job at it, and that's why I made the blocks. I then epoxied the blocks to the sides of these rails, through holes that I cut out of the bay rack. Construction of the blocks was quite simple. I cut two pieces of 3/4" 110 copper to be 1"x2". I then drilled a 1/2" hole down the middle of them, closer to one side than the other. the reason I used a 1/2 bit was because that was the size of the mount that my barbs had. Let me tell you there is no greater pain in the world than drilling and cutting copper without a press and a bandsaw. I hope I NEVER have to do it again. That said, I attached one standard male barb to one end and an elbow barb to the other so that the two drives' outlets would be facing eachother. Plain and simple and they do a fabulous job. Seriously, That rack used to get really hot to the touch and now it feels like a can of coke that came out of the fridge 1/2 an hour ago. Other ideas? my fav is this one. I would have done it this way if I had more room in my case of if I had seen this before I got the enclosures. Doesn't swifttech make a HD waterblock too? And you know, I've been thinking about it and remoting the PSU actually shouldn't be that hard. |

I've found that simply decoupling the HDD from the chassi of the PC has the biggest effect on sound level. I've used window sealant and two wooden frames to hold all of my four HDD's in my server and they are very silent (2xIBM40GV, 1xIBM60GXP, 1xIBM14GXP) compared to when I had them mounted to the chassi.
Here's a front view of my AOpen HX08 tower (click on image for large pic): ![]() Here's a wicked product called NoVibes that can serve as inspiration for a DIY version: http://www.noisecontrol.de/info/rahmen/eide/inf.htm

right, but neither of these solutions does anything for the high 15K whine that you hear. I'm sure your solution takes care of everything below 4K, but that high pitched stuff is really the big thing to silence. That and seek noise. What you did looks pretty cool though. Is that closed cell or open cell on the bottom? Do you find that it takes care of alot?

yeah, I disconnected the drive cage from the case, and I have it sitting on a mousepad, so the vibrations are reduced. It's the whine that gets me. I can't even hear the seeks... most of the time I'm studying/reading articles, so seeks wouldn't be an issue.

Yes, some drives exhibit whine from the motor and you can't get rid of that easily. But seek noise is a non-issue, I hear none of the drives seek - and I'm sitting a meter from the case.
The foam that the package rests on in the above picture is open-cell foam. Nothing fancy, but it not only does the job of isolating the package well from the chassi (not very important, the window sealing around the frames are the main thing), it also ensures that the package won't move around too much in the bay.

Interesting choice for routing your hose. Most people have the coolest water go to the CPU first, then to the vid card. Obviously, this would yield lower CPU temps than your setup. How much heat does a GF3 dissipate?
