Why not worry about building something new for your PC cooling rather than trying to hand build something that was designed for a car that you can run to any junk yard and pull out for next to nothing. This doesn't make sence to me. Perhaps you should start a new thread entitiled "Heat Exchanger Ideas From the Ground Up" or something. Just my 2 cents....

I'm currently in the process of making a purpose built radiator (to fit the side of the case) I'll make a post about it when I'm done.

Default Fin Attachment

You wouldn't actually have to do any soldering by using some kind of thin copper sheet. Just cut to size and then drill holes in the sheet about 1/32" (guessing) smaller than the OD of the copper tubing and "press fit" it down onto the tubing. Maybe then a couple of spots of Arctic Silver Epoxy to hold it firmly in place. The contact should be OK as the sheet fins would flare a little bit onto the tube. You'd have to experiment with sheet thickness and hole size.

that was an idea i had that i threw away for some reason  but now that you mentioned the flaring that would mean that more of the fins would be touching the copper pipe meaning better heat transfer. another question should i make the fins out of one big sheet of copper with lots of folds like in cars or should each fin be seperat like the one that i previosly showed from danger den and my design.

I'm not sure of the purpose for the shaped/folded fins. Maybe air turbulence over the fin for better heat dissipation. I'm guessing that a homemade radiator is going to lack the 'symmetry' that would result in laminar flow and say that you don't need folds.

Do you mean symmetry in the spacing of the fins or the folds

Maybe 'symmetry' isn't the best word. Maybe 'uniformity' is better. But what I mean is, the fins you make most likely are not going to be perfectly flat - they are likely to have nicks, bends, crinkles - like wadding up aluminum foil or a gum wrapper and trying to flatten it out. Also your spacing between fins, offset, angles of alignment are going to vary. These 'imperfections' may give you added air turbulence that the folds would normally provide on a core that was manufactured to more exact specs.

Remember, if your project is a flop, I'm only speculating here. On the other hand, if it works out great, I'll take the credit.

Im planning on using a sheet of luan cut to the size of the fins for spacing. im going to have a piece in between each piece when cutting the holes. then befor i put the fins on I will cut the sheets of luan along the holes. Then ill put the sheets of luan back inbetween each fin. then i put the pipes throug the holes and then pullout the luan. that why ill get evan spacing without the fins Bending.

Well, the price was right, so I nabbed it. $10 off ebay.

It will be in addition to my Gerwin style rad, with hopefully a temp drop. I havn't had time to try it out; I blew up my brand baby new 1600+ (always plug the pump in, guys, it works better than way ), so the temp drop isn't really needed anymore.

I need to rearrange a few things, dig up my old Maxi1200 (a single MJet isn't enough!!), and then I'll post with an update. It's 24 ft long, BTW, and 1/2"ID. This will bring total tubing in my system up to around 50ft, with a TC-4 & Innovatek GF4.

luan is plywood, about 1/8" thick, maybe less

I would not fold the fins because then you can't flow air across it (only longways)
