Heh, and I just got two Comair Rotron Caravel 550 CFM fans for it for just under $40. Mwahahaha! I don't think I'll have any problem letting that radiator breathe. I just have to find a way to cut the fan holes.

$40 for both?? That's a great deal, assuming they are new. I got my Caravel for about $60. I would be wary of used ones because those fans do tend to die eventually, and used ones often come from harsh industrial environments. You never know what shape the bearings are in.

Hope you got good ones, and when are we gonna see some pics of this monstrosity??

These are new in factory boxes, sold surplus. These are also the models with the chromey looking fan guards on them. Schweet deal, I think.

I've got an article cooking. I'll have pictures attached to a rough draft of it tomorrow, and I'll post the links for everyone to view and give input, before I put my first PC on permanently.

Wow, that is an awesome deal. I wish mine came with a fan grill! I'd never thought I'd need it until my mouse wire got stuck in the blades during a BF1942 match!!

Was this eBay auction or can you let us in on where you stole these suckers?

It was Ebay ... I bought them from a user called RadioTr. The first cost 21.50, and the second (outside of the auction, was going to be a seperate auction) cost 18.00 plus the extra shipping. I have it all being shipped cross country via UPS for about $50 total.

I may have extra fan grills when I'm done. I only need them on the outside surface, and these have both the inside and outside grills. I may be able to hook you up with a pair, depending on how this turns out (i.e., how close water-filled hoses get to my spinning fan blades!).

Fortunately, I found something a little more compact to suit my needs:
Lytron 4120

I'll take some better pics later, (I just received it today) that pic is from the auction. This came with 2 120mm AC fans (Nidec Alpha V's) and has 3/8" ID connections. Stainless steel tubing and copper fins. Brand new, $54 shipped ($352 retail).

BTW, if you need a Comair Rotron Caravel to slap on that thing (that's the fan they designed the mounts for), I have one for sale.
Koslov, sorry to intrude but my 4121 today and, of course, no power cords for the fans. Any suggestions? What are you using? Anyone with suggestions for acquiring powercords for these fans? I had planned on a 1/2" system for my first system but I may just use this as is with its 3/8" fittings and a used GeminiCool 3/8" fittings I traded for and see how it performs.

Look to see if you can't find the right plugs at Radio Shack for those terminals. Then buy some low gauge wire, crimp it to the plugs, and connect the other ends to a power cord. You can usually find power cords with bare leads at the hardware store.

I just realized that in the setup I have with just one computer on the cooling loop, it doesn't matter whether or not my desk fan is blowing across the radiator. It cools equally well both ways. I'm looking forward to seeing what difference the Caravels make. The loudest component in my system currently is my HDD. I can't hear my case fans running at all, and I have 4 of them (2x80mm@5V->in, 2x80mm@temp controlled V->out through PSU (Antec Truepower 480).

This 6320 would be perfect for somebody trying to make a silent PC, if they could accomodate the size. Most of mine isn't open to air flow and I'm still cooling better fanless than with a BIX.

Thanks for the info Koslov.

Man, someone paid $152.50 for one tonight. I should feel good about my $71 one. That's more than I paid for the MCS. Gotta love Ebay sometimes.

I also emailed Nidec for a source for the power cords as well. These are TA450AC Ball Bearing Fans 105cfm 120mm 3200rpm. I will probably swap them out for Panaflo L1As until I can rig or purchase a power cord.

Do you know how to solder? Go to a hardware store, buy a three prong plug for $0.49, then go to Radio Haxor and buy some medium gauge wire. Solder the sucker up and you're all set. For added fun, put in a fan controller inline. Total project cost, with controller: $14.

Airspirit

Did he hit you up on shipping after the bid? If so, may I ask where from to where to and how much?

He did not list any shipping charges or how they would be assessed in the payment details per his description.

Yet, after I win the bid he sends me a bill for 22.50 plus 20.00 shipping. I had already paid the 22.50 since his item lists shipping charges as 0.

I get the suspicion he's trying to makeup the difference in what the others went for via the shipping even though it's listed as 0.

TIA!

Hey bigdawg,

read it carefully. it clearly states that the buyer is responsible for shipping charges. the catch is he doesn't post what they are. should have called or emailed to get those charges in advance.

Well, since I've read it carefully three times prior, let's quote what it says even more clearly so there's no doubt.

Quote:
Buyer pays for all shipping costs, which are provided in the Payment Details section below. Seller ships internationally (worldwide).
Well, well. Let's see what the Payment Details stipulate.

Quote:
Payment Details

United States Shipping and handling US $0.00
Shipping insurance per item (not available)
Look, I'm not going to argue about the shipping charges and about what's a gotcha, what's clear or whether I read it carefully. But CLEARLY, other items he sells CLEARLY have shipping charges in the Payment Details section. This one does not.

But, frankly, that's not my question. My question was how much someone else was charged.

And yes, he did bump the shipping and HANDLING charges on you, as he is allowed to charge whatever he feels like for handling as long as he doesn't specify otherwise. Face it, you got raped, and there's nothing you can do about it. Still, you stole the f*cker, so don't get too upset over it.

Just make sure ambient air is on all sides of the sucker so it can radiate properly. I'm putting two Caravels on it next week and I'll see how good it does then. If it can do that good while holding its breath, I can't imagine how good it'll do when it can breathe.
