I have never figured out why MDs make such a big deal out of being called "Dr.". I could do the same, but prefer people call me Derek. *shrugs*

Well I couldn't do the Atkins diet (had my Gal Bladder out, and all that meat was giving me severe cramping) so I've started my own diet. I eat 5 small meals a day, equaling + - 2000 Calories. The smaller meals have made my stomach shrink, so I don't eat as much anyway. My metabolism has gone up, and I haven't added any extra exercise.
So far I'm losing 3 lb's a week and don't have to eat anything special. I just drink plenty of fluids. I'm going to add in some extra exercises, more for Cardio Vascular, than weight loss. |

(I was kidding about the Dr. thing, if you couldn't tell, hehe).
Yeah, that's a problem. The gall bladder is important for processing fat. Oddly, it will be kept extremely healthy if you eat plenty of fat, but if you don't have it you are screwed for this kind of diet. That and diabetic ketonosis are two of the major disqulifiers for this diet.

eating more often and in small amounts not only shrinks your stomach, but also increases metabolism! and that's exactly what makes you lose fat for good. spicy food also increases metabolism. fruit and veggies decrease it, however!

Rolling right along now. 9 days in and 9 lbs lighter. I have taken to eating the flax seeds with salads; not too bad. I am not really having any problem staying on this diet and it does seem to be working. Pants that were tight are just right again, and I think my blood sugar levels must be pretty stable because I am not getting hungry or tired during the day anymore. I am back to sleeping less too thankfully. I'll probably stay on induction but add in a cup or two of coffee and the occasional evening beer after 2 weeks is up.

So...how much sleep do you guys get with the Atkins diet? I don't sleep much, ever. I usually go with 2-3 hours of sleep a night, with 6 hours of sleep or less on weekends (total hours a night).

5-6 now but I am not drinking any coffee either. About the same as I was getting before drinking a ton of coffee. The big difference I am seeing is that before I would still be sound asleep when alarm went off, hit it a few times, and then be rushed getting ready. Now I am usually waking up before the alarm every day and can just pop out of bed. Your mileage may vary of course. I can't sustain less than 4 hours sleep for any length of time. 2-3 hours is crazy!

I told you, pH: your body does adjust. If you are having good success without the coffee it may be time for you to consider dropping it altogether ... it doesn't do you any good, that's for sure. If you don't need it then why drink it?
I've grown used to beating the alarm clock in the morning ... it almost never has a chance to go off because I wake up 20 minutes early now. I rarely if ever have any caffiene intake anymore. I think I'm better for it. Just wait until your used-to-be-tight pants need a sturdy belt to cinch them closed. It won't take too much longer. I dropped over two inches in my first two weeks.

Might as well give an update: Down 20 lbs after 30 days. I went off diet (kinda) in Madison last weekend and drank a ton of beer on Friday and Saturday. I tried to otherwise stick reasonably close to Atkins though. Over the weekend I had gained one whole lb which dropped back off on Monday. Then this week I have been just dropping weight like a rock: 5 lbs in 5 days! I had initially thought I'd stop at 200 lbs (what I weighed when I got married) but now I am thinking 185 is easily attainable. That's what I weighed the last time I didn't feel at all overweight (maybe 1995?).
This is with nothing but strict atkins diet and walking up and down the stairs at work whenever I need to go somewhere (5th floor). I am feeling a lot more energetic though now and plan to start doing some more rigorous exercising whenever I start adding more carbs back. |

The only thing that's ever really stuck for me is exercise bike + reading material. I can actually get caught up on journal articles and other technical issues while I ride for 20-30 minutes.

Yea I found one by dumpster at apartment complex once that just needed some bearing grease and a little loving on the brake mechanism that adjusts the resistance. But it didn't make the move to Canada unfortunately.

If you are trying to combine a weight gaining regimin with this diet you will need to take a few precautions to prevent muscle damage at the beginning. First you will need to go on two weeks of induction. This is designed to fully convert your body into a fat burning machine, and will ensure that you have no residual glucose left to burn ... it also will ensure that your muscles are fully accustomed to ketosis and that you as a person will be comfortable. You will literally feel and function differently. On those occasional times I go too high on carbs anymore it feels like I'm on crack ... when in ketosis you have a more calm and sure muscle response. It is something that is hard to explain but something you will understand during induction.
To start, you will need to set a date. On that date, all carb consumption will cease ... hehe. You need to stay under 20 carbs per day, and these need to be the right type (i.e. the right fruits and vegetables). Stay at it for two weeks. Toward the end of week two, start taking a protien supplement IN ADDITION to your diet to ensure that you will have the right amino acids available for protien development. MAKE SURE THIS DOES NOT CONTAIN AN IRON SUPPLEMENT. Also, you should be taking multivitamins (WITHOUT IRON) throughout to promote good health. After the two weeks are done, ease into a weight lifting routine and start gradually increasing your carb count with GOOD carbs (no sugar, starches, processed grains, etc) to around 40-50 (YRMV). This raise in carb counts will help replace the small amounts of protien burnt via glucogenesis and will enhance your muscle growth. First off, though, do some research on the diet to ensure you know what you're getting in to. It's not for everyone ... especially if you're a bread/pasta fanatic.

well i didnt even mean with the diet. i am a bread/pasta fanatic. my average food intake for the day is as follows:
breakfast(1 day's worth) box of cereal, 1/2 dozen bagels, leftover lasagna/spaghetti/whatever pasta, cereal bars, a gallon of orange juice, a couple apples/oranges/tomatoes/whatever's colorful and juicy brunch(in addition to breakfast) gallon of orange juice, donuts, a container of yogurt lunch 2/3 roast beef wraps/sandwiches, gallon of water/milk, quick pasta(simple stuff like spaghetti), muffins, some kind of fruit, some kind of snack food that i can find(chips, etc) dinner steak. i'm just looking for a good exercise routine that's cheap, and maybe some key foods to look for for weight gain(in a healthy way) thx |

Er, then just take a protien supplement (full amino range) and hit the gym. *shrugs*

I know the book says that caffine is a bad thing for this diet.
why is that? And how serious is the restriction? I've decide to restart on it. I did the atkins for about 2 months and lost ~25 lbs. Got off it for 2 months and kept the weight off. now I'm going to get back on and try for 10-15 more lbs by Xmas. I kept drinking diet coke/diet Mt dew last time and it didn't seem to affect the weight loss. I'm willing to go with out now but I'm curious about why the diet has that restriction.

It has to do with the regulation of blood sugar/insulin levels. Atkins only says to go totally without caffeine during induction anyway.
I have a cup of coffee on occasion now (when I need it) but don't really miss it too much. |

Started at 207, now at 190 after about a month. Just made up some quick concoctions for breakfast and lunch for the week.
Eggs (no Cholesterol), turkey, onions, garlic, olive oil, a touch of horseradish, some of the gelatin from the bottom of the pan for the Rotissirie Chicken I got at grocer this weekend (very little fat, think of cold homemade chicken soup in the fridge) and stir-fry vegies (the okay kinds), about 3/4 cup of oat bran (Fiber) w/ a slice of sharp cheddar on the top for breakfast (made 8 servings in about 1/2 hour. 1 chicken + 1 turkey sausage covered w/ another slice of cheddar (had to finish the package!) for lunch. Salads for dinner. Eating nuts for snacks along w/ cheese sticks and cottage cheese. Check out chocovic for great low-carb real chocolate. Now to find some droste unsweeted cocoa (Need more antioxidants!) ![]()
