Default Official: Cheating on Benchmarks OK

"Futuremark now has a deeper understanding of the situation ..." - translation, "Futuremark knows who pays the bills, and it ain't the whistle blowers."

Sheeze, I'm all for software optimization to increase performance, but not at the expense of quality! Come on, nVidia. Own up to your strategy. There is no problem with having optimizations as long as they can be disabled to see what the game developer(s) ORIGINALLY INTENDED.

The companies could have taken this as an opportunity to showcase their software talent, but they turned it into a ethics mess by deciding to hide their optimizations. Doesn't it sound better to have the ability to boost performance by 30% with a minor hit in image quality? With FutureMark, you can even see how much of a boost you could get. Sure sounds better to me. I usually get tired of the eye candy in a game and get down to playing it after a couple of days anyway. At that point, I prefer fluidity to fidelity. But, let me make the choice, not you.

Well the clipping planes were the biggest deal. Can you imagine playing a game like Q3 and spinning around only to find a big hole where graphics should be? Unacceptable and no way that is an optimization.

Well, the clipping plane modifications are totally bogus. I was saying that reducing the level of precision could be acceptable if it was a user choice.

Liberals should get Kyle to rewrite the history books; he's great at revisionist history!

Does no one that reads his site remember his defending NVIDIA throughout the 3dmark03 deal? Actually probably not come to think about it. It has been more than "3 sleeps" ago.
