How does the modded DDC Ultra stack up against the D5 in terms of performance?
Is the performance comparable or even better? Or is it so similar its negligible? |

The DDC Ultra with either the RadIIcal or Alphacool tops out perform the D5 with less heat dump.

Thanks, all I needed to know.
I have found a guide with DIY modding. Does anyone have any experience with it? Quick and easy? |

Flowrates is an important aspect in pump performance and heat dump, another aspect of pump performance, is not mentioned as much.
A modded DDC will have nearly matching flowrates as D5 and similar PQ curve. http://www.systemcooling.com/mcp350_mod-04.html http://www.systemcooling.com/mcp350_mod-06.html http://coolercasesuk.co.uk/showthread.php?t=15 note D5 is a slightly better performing version of D4 Laing DDC + TDX (nozzle1) = 9.7 LPM (mod top) Laing D4 + TDX (nozzle1) = 9.5 LPM Laing DDC-1Plus + TDX (nozzle1) = 10.5 LPM (for top inlet with alphacool top) DDC 1plus will outperform the D4/D5 pump. DDC mod is equal to D5 Heat dump is second factor not mentioned in either of those articles. Lower heat dump from the mcp 600/aquaexetrme-50z allows it to perform as well if not better than D5 pump. I think a modded DDC will outperform D5 both due to less heatdump and having similar flowrates. I think the modded DDC Ultra extra flowrates might offset by additional heatdump but not sure how much. I just did the mod this weekend. Based on the systemcooling article, I would say 30 mins to 1 hr depending on the tools you have. If you have the correct drill bits it should be very easy.
Steps 1) Remove screws at the base. 2) remove top 3) use small drill bit to drill pilot hole 3) use larger drill bit to drill OD that matchs barb 4) use larger drill bit to remove the plastics flange on the top 5) cut the barb 6) check to the barb fits snugly on the top and sandpaper the plastic area for epoxy 7) apply epoxy If you do a two barb mod like in coolercases it takes about 1 hr 1 1/2hrs takes more work to clear the plastic, thread the top and prepare the second barb. Took me about 2 1/2 hrs because I did extra steps like porting the outlet to a larger ID, removing all the plastic on the top till it's flush, removing excess epoxy, cutting metal barbs, and using perm marker to mark epoxy black. Most of the time as actually deciding what barb to use but i decided to use old nickel plated 1/2" ID barbs. I had to decided from 9/16" hi-flow fittings, G 1/4"barb, plastic black barb Y, clear plactic barb Y, 1/2" to /3/8" reducer, 1/4" NPT black or clear barb, or old 1/2" ID metal barb.
