DDC Pump Failure help!

The pump is fitted into a friends pc and does not start atall :(

What could cause this? it was working fine last night and the day before (which was when it was installed).

Ive checked the PSU voltage, its 11.67v, so no problem there.

Ive done a resistance check on the pumps + and - leads, witha reult of 17.99kOhm
I also checked the resistance on my D4 pump, which is >20mOhm according to my multimeter so neither really say anything.
If it was a normal brush-DC motor a high resistance would say if the motor coils were broken..

Any ideas how I can get it to start? preferably without having to drain the loop or get a replacement pump..

This is a rare, but not unknown problem with the DCC pump. On Procooling.com there have been several mentions of this, one by cetoole here:

http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/sho...ems#post134533

...and also here:

http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=11745

...and elsewhere on the internet: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=19605

...on that forum, eander315 states:

It appears that there were a few pumps with a microprogramming problem that causes the pumps to fail to start. The links below explain it better, and Bill from Swiftech said he'll convey more info on this as soon as more becomes available. In any case, the best way to fix this problem is to RMA the pump with the vendor.

If you have a pump with serial no: 3166546 or higher you should be OK. If not, RMA asap.

Well, you should read read the answers provided by Ralph from Laing, to the questions that Rosco made.
Here's the link: http://www.cooling-masters.com/forum...ic=1446&st=725
Cases existed when you were given another new pump as a RMA replacement, and the same symptoms happened too, so don't know what's best.

Thanks for replys. I also replyed here.

There is not a "few" pumps with this problem!

Everyone I know has had this same problem. You need only visit the Danger Den site to see other people just like you.

Im unsure whether to send it back or not. Is there anything I can try to permentantly fix it?

I dont want to tap it every time the computer turns on :(

Most people replace DDC with a C-systems mag or a Danger Den D5.
The mag is smaller then ddc and the D5 is much larger.

I find the D5 very big and noisey, although others at DD find it quite.

The mag is very quite :)

Well I find that the DDC is just a niosy a my D4 (which is one of the ones without the revision to make them lower niose). It is atleast the same pitch/type of niose, maybe quieter but just as noticable..

I think I would replace it with a D5 as I imagine it wouldnt have any new problems over the D4

Doesnt the c-ystems pump have some issues? All I know is its cheaper (about 2/3rds the price).
Prices/pump selection in the UK:

D4 & D5, AND DDC are all about £50.
Csytems = £25-40
HydorL20=£20-25, L30 = £25-35
Eheim 1250 = £45-50, 104*=£25-40
Also I think theres a seller of aqua extreme (mpc600?) for £50-55.

DG 07-07-2005 03:46 PM

I think you mean the 750 model, not the Mag.
I have never had a 750, so no idea how it works.

For the MAG, there has been one post on this board with a problem. It turned out his pump was jammed for days and once cleared the pump was still OK.

Thinks you can find it in here if you look back.

My friend finds his D5 is noisy compared to the Mag, unless he turns it down.
As I commented on DD board, "whats the point of big pump if you need to turn it down?"

DD is still replacing the DDC's in fact they have stopped selling them until they get a new revision at the end of the month.

They offered to send me one of the new ones when they come in, or substitute it with a different pump.

Has anyone seen a review of the D5 that has a DB rating for the D5??

I'd like the flow but not the noise if it is over 30DB.

Strangly my DDC pump seems to now be working fine and has been for about a week. I think there must have been some air trapped in the impeller housing which stopped it starting properly.. though might be another reson (thats the reson laing give for the problem, for all pumps with a serial number higher than the one they stated).

As for the D4/5, I would have to agree with DG, "As I commented on DD board, "whats the point of big pump if you need to turn it down?""

If I were building a 3rd system, I would most likley go with a c-systems or for cheapness a hydorl20 depending on the system.

I've got good reson to turn my D4 down though - I dont need 9l/m :)
When I upgrade, I can turn the pump up to counter the extra restriction, however:

Ive talked about the relevance of flow rates and temperature with a few engineers and from also looking at the procooling test results. We think flow rate above a certian point (3l/m?) will only effect performance by a few degrees - which wouldnt noticably affect an overclock unless it was already on the border of being limited by heat.

As for D4 niose, the pitch is very different to a fan, very high pitched and quite annoying.
At 6v its still there (about the minuim voltage without using PWM to drive it), but much quieter. If you had a silent pc, you would still notice the high pitch a lot and it would be very annoying.

I think for my d4, the differnece between 6v and 12v might be as little as 2-5°c oI would prefer less niose.

My DDC ran fine for 2 weeks with no issues, then suddenly started the no start behavior....So I doubt it's air, but I can tilt and twirl :) the parts some more to make sure ...

I was only considering the D5 as Cathar suggested that is a better fit with the Storm block than the DDC in one of his posts.

Thanks for the feedback
