I think they measure at 6 inches away inside a box with only the HD in it.

Since most everyone has their HD inside of a case sitting a few feet away will make the drive much more quiet. I have noticed that my 40G WD hard drive is much louder than my other HD's.

nahh he is probably right, the delta 38cfm is 45dba...6ft away at a 45 degree angle or something

DigitalChaos 03-01-2002 11:55 PM

but wtf... 26 is like super quiet... and the barracudas were supposed to be at right around that

like i said, i cant even hear my cuda at idle (ourside the case)
how could it possibly be 50 dba

NeosPirahnis 03-02-2002 02:18 PM

if you have a cuda just put your box under your desk... my friend has 4 of them, doesnt hear anything but a nice humm, and the heads occasionally

decodeddiesel 03-02-2002 08:03 PM

You do realize cuda's are the quietest drives made (aside from solid state of course)? There is absolutly no need to put your machiune under your desk with these in it, in fact putting your machine under your desk for any hard drive is rather rediculious.

edit: Besides we all know Tom is a f****** idiot anyway.

Maybe its 50dBA at 23Hkz and you can't even hear it.

thanks for the hostility diesel.........

was just a suggesstion. friends of mine have systems with 4 127mm Nidec 190cfm fans in there systems, and the best way other than soundproofing the box to suppress the noise was to just put it under their desks.

Brad 03-03-2002 05:06 PM

If I had those fans I'd run them at 5v or 7v :)

OK, first of all if my words were taken as hostile I appoligize. I am a straight up kinda person and I don't sugar coat anything I say for anyone. I call it like I see it, and if it may grate someone, or be taken as "hostile" frankly I'm not going to loose sleep over it. I have spent over 4 years in combat arms in the US Army (still am in as a matter of fact) and I'm afraid any tactfullness you may have posessed before enlisting goes to sh*t the first time you are deployed to a hot zone, or even have a Drill Sargent screaming in your face. So anyway now that I qualified my remark, let me say that there is a slight difference between a Baracuda IV and a 172mm fan. Obivously placing your computer under your desk to help reduce the noise of 4 6" fans makes a hell of a lot more sense than placing your system under a desk for a hard drive. This is punctuated by the fact that the Cudas are damn near silent. Hell one L1A at 7v will drown it out, how can anyone hear a HDD of any type, much less a Cuda IV, over 4 6" fans??? You are making little or no sense in my book. Have a nice day.
