Which Radiator for the Cascade waterblock ???
In a few days i'm getting my Cascade waterblock (Thanks to Cathar) ... and i want opinions on the heatercore .
The pump that i'm going to use is an Eheim 1250 (317gph). I don't have any problem with the dimensions (actually i want to buy a big one) and so far i'm thinking about something at 25x25x5 cm (ideally for 4 12cm fans) , but it wouldn't be a problem to take something at 40x40x5 cm for 9 12cm fans. Of course i can always use less fans in order to have silence ( i like the idea ! ) :drool: Will there be any problem with the pump ??? ... i mean is there an equation to tell you which is the biggest heatercore you can use with a specific pump (gph) ??? In case you are wondering where i'm going to find a heatercore like this , my answer is that i'm going to order it to a company that makes heatercores/radiators. Of course it will be with copper pipes and aluminium fins . ;) Thank you. |
Hellion Prime had a 10"x10" heatercore on this forum; maybe he will post in this thread with some info on flow rates with it. In general, the bigger the better as long as it's low flow resistance. From Bill's recent thermochill testing you might be able to get SOME idea of how pressure drop in a heatercore might scale with size. Or there were some discussions of an equation in the water cooling simulation discussion forum I think.

Single pass. Check out my concoction log this weekend afte I finally get time to post the last pics. MBM says my CPU is running 36c whilst running prime95 torture test, 30c no load. (would be even lower but wanted to get another 100mhz out of my lovely barton:D)

I've just recently moved, and most of my gear is in storage untill we get a larger place, so I cant post any hard data on flowrates for my 9x9x2 heatercore.
The design of the heatercore will be the big kicker for you, I think. You might also give some thought to going with larger fans than the 120mm models you're thinking of since the rad will be so large. Let me know what you find. I'd be interested in one that size myself. I'm assuming you're putting it in a seperate enclosure, given its size. You might have a problem with head loss, depending on the distances involved. I just gave the exact dimensions to the shop and i'm waiting for the price ! :D ...if the price is high , i might consider a used truck heatercore , or the car radiator ...
Has anyone tried it ??? (car radiator) ?? . AFAIK the car radiators have a lot better flow rate than the heatercore , but it needs some modification to the connectors ... Hellion_Prime > i'm not going to put it in an encloser . I will leave it standind in a corner under my desk. |

If the $$ are high though here are some very large rads. YOu can find them in the heater core data base. 2-192 2-193 2-308 All are pretty big. You could hang 4 X 4 120mm fans on that first or last monsters. That should do to cool about anything. I'd guess a larger pump might be in order though. Iwaki MD-20rlzt ? |
After looking at the pics, mine's a 2-308. The mounting flange is a Very Good Thing. I had 4 172mm Comair Rotron Patriots set to pull air through it. :D

Hmmm ... my problem is that i live in Greece and i don't think i'll be able to find these radiators . However i noticed that the larger are from Chrysler so i might be lucky and find one .
About the pump ...i'm not sure if i'll need a larger pump ... this is my main problem , as i don't know for a given water capacity of a heatercore which is the smaller pump you can use . (or size doesn't matter but is flowrate dependant ??? ) |

Ôïday i ordered my radiator !!!!
It's double pass full copper cellular type . Dimensions 30x45 cm ! :) Tommorow it will be ready ! The pump i'm going to use is an Eheim 1250 which i already have bought. But ... I'm still waiting for the Cascade . It shipped 9 days ago (Monday 28/7) , but it seems that it's a long way to Greece . |
