These controller boards can also be used in the 4000's. And some users have done just that. But that a different ball of wax. Have you tried replacing the ide cable. Is your's 40 or 80 cond? My 2000 power connectors were pretty loose, I don't know if the heat cause this. It was the cause of one of my drives not spinning up.

Are you using RAID 1? If so you could use dd to copy the image on the good hd to the second.
