The password and drive config data is actually stored in the clock register. It has a battery that is good for 10 yrs.

The OS is storred on the fist 20-25 meg of the HD. All 1100 store the OS on the HD. They are hidden from mormal access till you get into debug.

Check to see if you are getting full capacity. Most cases if you copy HD or image file to a new HD you need to reinit the drive if you don't have full capacity.
