Snaps can only be read with another snap. There was a user (snap_???) that said he had recovery software that worked on snaps hd. He does it as a service. But if your HD has failed you ony have a couple of options. If it was the controller board, some times swaping them out with another drive that has the same board. If it was hardware, only the recovery services a can take it apart and read the platters. $$$$

On booting from the DD disk. Did you burn it as a "iso" or normal data disk? PC can NOT read or mount the HD. DD does a sector RAW copy. Which means it just read and write and does not try to interpet the data. I need to re-write the dd procedure using the live cd. From the mount section you can see the device ID seen by the linux. Generally you boot from the cd then drop to cmd line.
