Default Re: Snap 4100 data recovery

Must be a 4100 with v3 OS. 3.4.803-807 was the last free updates. It's possiable a upgrade OS will not cause any problems. But, I do know there is a problem with the upgrade OS if you have a drive failure.

If I recall there is a fuse on the 4100 PS. Maybe you just blew a fuse. I think it is a std 1U PS 250W. Get the model # off the PS. And check for fuses, may need to open the case. It's been sever years since I have powered mine up.

Re-reading your original post, I think the PS may still be good, just kicked off on overload. The inrush current on starting HD's are a lot higher than most think. It's possiable that one drive is stuck and want spin up. If you don't mind trying a few things. Mark the drives 1-4 (left to right) to ensure the order does not get mixed up. Remove the power from all drives. With the power removed see if the 4100 will come on line. You should beable to access the admin pages without any HD's. If the led's light up the PS may still be good. I would then remove the drives and connect them to a PC power supply, DO NOT CONNECT THE IDE CABLE. And make sure they will spin up. Let them spin for several minutes to get the greese moving again. Do this for every drive. I think 1 may be stuck, I've seen this many times on equipment thats run 24/7. Now if the 4100 booted with no HD's installed, install the drives back into the 4100 in the same order removed. Then try to power the 4100 back on.

The hardware is different between the 4000 and 4100., even though their both are flashram models. If you were just wanting to reuse the drives I would say yes, but if the data is a must have I say no. The 4000 have a bad reputation for having weak PS.

How much data is on the drives, not being used in over a year. If you concern about someone accessing the data, you can removes the drives to a pc and use an eraser program to whip the drives.
