Noise from a HD may indicate a bad HD. The snaps 2200 PS is 4-5watt on 12v. The only concern would be spinup. After that it should be fine. These units are design for 24/7 operation. Starting and stopping them on a daily bases is not good. Particularly on the PS.

My guess would be the 100 gig has bad bearings, pulling every thing down.

I'm running 2 300gigs in my 2200. It has been up for over 2.5-3 yrs now. And only shutdown twice in the whole time. But my Smart-UPS can carry my system for 1.75 hr. Or till the batteries reach low condition. Then all of my servers are shut down. And auto started (except 2200) after the batteries reach a 25% charge.
