This depends on SN and/or whether you have the colored IDE cables. Normally you match what was in there.
Now what size & mfg of HD's are you trying to install? Some brands cause problems at times. In the wiki section there is a list of upgrade notes that may help.
Are you sure the Cat5e cable is good? This will not make any difference if the HD leds do not light.
Remember the HD are are numbered left to right. So drive 1 will be the far left one.
