The 4200 is in the same family as my 4500. The max is limited by the IDE interface which is around 500gig. It will work with 1T if you can find the correct interface. As for noise you want them in a cabinet so it can help muffle the sound. These have a blower on the cpu which has a very high dBA. Lets just say you don't want them in the living room.

At 40 gig I would think you may have a 4100, if this is the case your max is limited to 137gig. Read the FAQ's
