Crash!!!!
Hi Everyone - ok my 2200 crashed last night
Fortunately the mirrored drive did EXACTLY what I thought it would do and the server is back up and running and the mirrored drive is almost finished rebuilding the back up disk. HOWEVER - when I went in to the server log I found this under E for errors: File System : Failed to resynchronize logical set 50000, error -1 Does anyone know what this means? |

Re: Crash!!!!
Thanks for getting back to me blue68f100!
Nope it just crashed while I was trying to copy some files over.... no new HD's. It spent all night friday and have the day on Saturday rebuilding the disks. I have attached some screenshots to show everyone what I am seeing. So your saying that even though it "says" its mirrored its really not? Thanks Rick |

Re: Crash!!!!
According to the log, it fails re-sync, then try's to repair a fatal error. Which also fails.
Strange that it still reports the raid 1 mirror is good. Check to confirm the cooling fan is working. Heat causes some strange errors. Then look at the complete log to see if it's drive 0 or 1 that may be having a problem. May want to do a system reset. This will not cause any data loss. You said you put HD's in? Are these new? if so what mfg? Have the drives been tested?

Re: Crash!!!!
I normally open the case up and see. There is like 1 or 2 screws and the unit slides out of the case.
Take a close look at the complete log. See if one of the drives having problems.

Re: Crash!!!!
Got it. Unfortunately I guess I will have to wait to crack it open
The server is running again and I went to Disk Utilities > View Disk status and it says: Mirror - Data protection disk Rebuilding backup disk. 1% complete I did go to the server log and attached is what I have so far: http://u-niquedesignstudios.com/log.htm |

Re: Crash!!!!
If it hangs around the 6% area, you have a bad HD where the Snap OS stores file/HD info. If this are you have no other option but to replace the HD. Work on getting it backed up if you have not done so.
You may be able to use a strip of TP around the back and bottom should tell you if the cooling fan is running.

Re: Crash!!!!
Okay so I just checked the Disk status and it now says:
Mirror - Data protection disk OK Here is the current log file: http://u-niquedesignstudios.com/log-new.htm I hate to ask but what is a strip of TP? You said I can put it around the back to see if the cooling fan is working? I know I can put my hand around the back and I can feel the fan. Last edited by rickmann08; 02-07-2012 at 11:27 PM. |

Re: Crash!!!!
If you can feel the fan working it may just need blown out. Any thing with cooling fans are just dust magnets. Next time you get time shut it down and pull the unit apart to clean. I use my air compressor, just back off and let the dust fly. Another good option is to use a weed blower, works great.

Re: Crash!!!!
Thanks for the heads up! I will try that this weekend!
Right now it seems to be working just fine! I went to the server log and it says: I DHCP/BOOTP: Setting IP address to blah blah blah and it says that 4 times! |

1) Always hold the fan blade so it won't turn when you blow the dust out. If the blade spins, it can over-speed and damage the fan motor / bearings. 2) Allow the unit to cool down fully before blowing the dust out, particularly if using one of those canned air dusters - what comes out is very cold and you can damage components from thermal shock if you blast them with cold air when they're hot. |

Re: Crash!!!!
DAMN IT!!!! Ok my server just crashed AGAIN!!! This makes 3 times!
All 3 times it just shuts off with no warning or noise. Then it waits a second or 2 and them comes back on and spends all night checking itself!! This is getting NUTS and scary!!!! blue68f100 I did wait you said and Terry I also took your advise and waited a few hours for the unit to cool down before I cleaned it out!! Anything else that we can recommend that is causing the problem? This time I was in the middle of saving a file. Last 2 times I was copying over files. In ALL 3 crashes I was in a different folder when it crashed!!! Last edited by rickmann08; 02-14-2012 at 11:44 PM. |

Re: Crash!!!!
Never have heard of one starting back up on it's own. Could be a power supply, they go bad from time to time. If I recall some had problems with the power jacks and switch. Are you running a UPS in front for constant power? These older units were power sensitive.

Re: Crash!!!!
Yeah all 3 times it just turns off and then comes back on. Then it checks the 1st disc and the mirrored drive.
I was wondering if it was the power supply but it only does this while I am working and all the stuff I was working on is small files. The second time it crashed was when I was copying files. Yeah I have the unit plugged directly into a UPC. What do you think could be going on?? |

Re: Crash!!!!
Andy, Your the Hardware guy ............. but I don't think you ever had a 2200.
Since the units rebooting on it's own, which is very odd for the 2200 to do that since you have to hold the power button down and hold for it to start. 500 (x2) gig HD's are very large for these units. I never used past 300gig. Now if these are lower rpm HD (5400rpm) you don't have the heat or power requirements. What brand are the HD's? You may want to look up the power specs of the HD's and see if it's exceeding the PS for a start. If I recall once you hit the 4 platters you were over spec on 7200rpm drives, if I recall. Then their were mfg that add firmware so they could not be used in RAID5. Not sure if that included Raid1. To test for heat, remove the chassis out of the case. Cover the sides so it draws from the front exhausting from the back. If you have a small fan you can use externally, do so for added cooling.

Re: Crash!!!!
Yeah I was able to get my data back. Actually it is kind of weird because after the unit restored itself I backed everything up to a external drive and it never crashed but after I backed everything and whet to check some folder properties it crashed again!!
This makes 5 times!!! I am wondering if it may be my apc battery back up? It is fairly new (bought it last year). I have the server, a pc, a mac, and an external drive plugged in to it. It is a UPS ES 750. |

Re: Crash!!!!
Also I am not sure if this helps but here is what the guy that I bought it from said:
I never had that issue with the snap server. I can only think of two things. One is the fan. Does the fan still work? If not then replace it. I replaced the fan with a bigger one when I had it. The other thing is the power supply. It is an external power supply. They are rather inexpensive. You might try getting another one. They tend to burn out over time. I had to get a new one for the snap server since I got it without a power supply. I am glad that it had been working good for you. Sorry it has started having issues. The unit around 10 years old now. It could just be at the end of it's life. THEN HE SAID THIS: I was thinking that it had a brick type power supply. I know the 2000 had a built in power supply. and the 1100 and 1000 had external power supplies. I am having a hard time remembering. If I am right, it has just a external power supply. Look at the model number on it and order the same. I think that type is used with LCD screens. That is the only thing else I can think of that might work. or it is just worn out or it is just starting to go. Does this help?? |

Re: Crash!!!!
I don't have time to try and explain in detail what is most likely problem with it still crashing. If you would like to give me a call at 425-244-0302 when you have about 10 min to talk, I am available anytime.
