In an effort to reduce the amount of heat dumped into the water by my wmd20rlt, i was thinking: Is it possible to mod the housing to vent the heat? Ther answer to this, I have no idea. So i figured i would bring it up with you guys. Has anyone ever opened one of these things up to see exactly how they are constructed, and if it would be possible to make some sort of air vents to help in the cooling of the motor. I think if we cooled the motor down with some air flow we could reduce the amount of heat dumped into the loop by roughly 5 watts. That may not seem like a whole lot, but its a free 5 watts. its like undervolting your cpu by .05 volts.
So if anyone has any info on this, please share. ... Cathar that means you! ![]() ![]()

ahh very intersting. Though my pump is very very very different. But interesting none the less. Im just scared to rip apart my 120 dollar pump.

It wont hurt the pump to run hot. The heat it puts into the loop is best cooled by the radiator. Cutting open the pump will void the warranty and will probably let lots of crap in there that will eventually destroy it. Iwaki did a good job designing the pump, so dont mess with it.

I know its meant to run hot, but damnit I am engineer and there is ALWAYS room for improvement!
but it is expensive. I was mostly hoping for someone that had done this before to see what they had done.. but no one seems to have done so.

A modest cost method of try'n to lower the pumps temp would be to use some cheap passive fined sinks attached to the pumps housing with thermal epoxy (a blend of AS5 would allow removal if it's of little to no value.). Should not be to expensive to attach enough of these sinks to see if you gain enough to warrant the cost.
If the pump is in a location of low air flow you could also install a fan to provide more air flow over the pump. I'd install the fan first however to see just what effect the fan alone would have. |

Yah the only prob is getting rounded heatsinks. I had thought of htis a while back, but cant find any heatsinks that fit the bil. I think it would help out with my cpu and gpu temps.

Alpha sinks such as carried by Frozen CPU & 1CoolPC cut into the individual finned rows and then attached to the housing would be one way to do this. Other way is to bend these or other sinks to the proper curved shape to make full contact with the pump housing being another. Bending to the proper contours would be easier with the sinks cut to strips as well. Such gains for CPU & GPU will be small, but props to you for push'n the limits in everyway possible. I hope you post results & pics if you do this. I'll be interested in how many sinks you add & for what gains. And your Iwaki pump with it's decoupled impeller and high pump case heat should be a top candidate for getting the most results for the effort involved. I hope your pump is in a exterior rad/pump box, otherwise you will be dumping the released pump heat into the interior case air & then I don't see how you'd gain much of anything. |
