Hi! Our old 4100 tends to overheat easily. I replaced the fan about a year ago, but it didn't last. We don't use it much so it hasn't been an issue, but I am taking it out of mothballs to repurpose it as a backup box. Even with the cover off, it runs for a while and then the processor fan sputters to a stop. If I give it a short blast of air, it kicks up again, but this is not a good long-term solution! (I have already had to move the head to another of the power leads.) Do you guys suppose I can just replace the whole heatsink with another 1U heatsink and fan combo (like this one)? And should it blow or suck air relative to the heatsink? It's such tight quarters in the case, that either way doesn't seem very effective...
And while we're on the subject, is it possible to replace the processor itself? Just curious. Thanks! Mike |

The fan is cpu controller, it will cycle. Or you can tap one of the drives for power. I think there is another spot to connect the fan so it runs 24/7.

Hmmm... Logs indicate it was definitely overheating and shutting down the system. Has anyone produced a schematic to this board indicating which heads do what?

Blow into the Heatsink. Yes, but not above 233Mhz Pentium. Just replace the fan on the heatsink with a new one and move the power connector to the other connector near the memory slot. |

If you don't mind being a little "ghetto" and can't find an always on connector then you can always just snip off the fan connector and tuck the leads onto the female wires coming out of your PSU (yellow to red, black to black)

I appreciate everyone's help! I think I might have some spare processors laying around, too. Now, what about the RAM? Is it upgradeable? Does anyone know if it is ECC or non-ECC and if PC100 would work? I've got a 256MB PC100 non-ECC DIMM here and will drop it in, but don't want to jack up the motherboard....

The 4100 uses PC 100/133 DIMM (non EEC) low density ram. If you install high density it will only see 1/2 of it. Unless you have a lot of users you will not get any speed gains past the 128. If you deside to run JVM it will use the extra ram.
