I know this has already been discussed in the sticky above, but I really need to upgrade a 4100 I just received. I purchased it purposely to save money on running a rack of 12 SCSI disks. Now I find out I have to spend another $200 (on top of the price I paid for the 4100) just to allow it to work in my environment (W2K3 Server with AD).
I don't have any Linux-like systems. Is there anyway for me to use my 4100 running 3.4.790 with AD...or upgrade directly to 4.0.860? I really can't afford the $200. Not to mention this is really irritating. I thought I asked all the right questions before I purchased the 4100. Oh and by the way, this is my first post. Great sight!!!! Steve |

There is a work around be requires the use of a linux box, that you don't have. Did you get all of the manuals and Assist with the 4100. I hope you know that the 4100 does not support LBA48bit, if you were plannng on upgrading the drives too.
If you purchased it new, complain to Adaptec that it was shipping with out of date OS.

No, I bought it used. I do have Assist and the manuals I got online. I already knew about the lack of LBA48 support...that's fine for my needs.
So I have to have a Linnux box???? That is plain crazy. I just don't want the hassle of managing ANOTHER O/S. If I only knew before hand.... |

Thats good that you knew going in. You would be suprised on how may come through here wanting to put 300 - 500 gig drives in the 4100.
What size drives are in your unit? 4 x 80 = 320's is the most common. On your RAID 5 set, are you going with a 3 or 4 disk set?

I have 4 X 60gb drives. I set it up for one big 4 disk RAID 5 set. At some point later, I was thinking about going with 120GB drives. What are the minimum specs for an IDE drive for the 4100? I figure getting a high performance drive may not make sense with the network as the bus.
After thinking more about the OS upgrade issue, I realize I would be paying $200 just to have the integrated AD ability. I refuse to give Adaptec money for this. I will just create local accounts. Does anyone know of a way to have the AD server mount the Snap share and then share it back out using another set of credentials? Does that make sense? If I did that, I could use the AD security and the 4100 would just allow the server to connect to the shares. If this works, then I don't think the OS upgrade would be completely necessary. Adaptec sucks. Steve |

The AD is over my head, don't have a server to test anyway.
As for drives, alot of users have started installing 160gigs. Knowing it will be cut back to 130gig. But with prices falling the 160 have been cheaper than 120s. The Snap uses a std IDE ATA100 interface. If you are buying interprise drives, they are suppose to be for heavy use (24/7). Another note: Since a raid array cannot be viewed with a bad drive, I would advise buying a spare. Because 3 yrs from now a 120 or 160 may be rare, with a price of $400+. With the current price of around $70-80 USD. I don't think there is a Snap User that likes Adaptec. When the merger went through, all of the old software was no longer accessable. Adaptec sold off all of their spare parts for discontinued units. Adaptes says we no longer support these units, buy a new one. I give them a couple of years and the SnapAppliance Name will be lost. I think Adaptec wanted there server market for service. But I think it is backfired on them, alienating clients. I don't think they relised that these Small number of users they ran off worked for big corporation. Having a say on what hardware they buy. It's been proven over and over if your service stinks you will loose. No matter how good a product you may have.
