I've setup a 4500 to access our domain what appears to be succesfully but am having trouble changing/adding file and folder permissions. When I click 'add' on the security tab of a folder on the 4500, I am able to find the user or group in the domain successfully, but, after I set the permissions and press OK, 9 times out of ten, the properties screen will freeze and the permissions never take. If I try to change the permission of a folder that has nothing in it, the screen will freeze for a minute or so, then the user or group will disappear from the 'group or usernames' section of the security tab.
I'm using an XP Pro machine that is connected to the domain with Admin rights. The snap server is connected to the domain with the same account I am using on this PC. I've been looking for a few days now, and can't find anything useful on google or adaptec's 'Ask' knowlege base. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks! Tyler |

If it's AD, must be set through MS. Someone else will hav eto help you. if not read on.
The default share gives every user admin rights. So what you need to do is create a new share and restrict the access. Any users with root access can roam. My guess this is what causing you problems. If you setup the 4500 just my copying files across, then select the files/folders and try to add permisions that is not the correct way. I'm only familiar with v4 setup. I have found it easier to use the the Security guides. First add all users to the 4500 and setup the groups. Then use the the security guide to grant access to a single folder or full access, the bottom 2 choices. I find it better to set up a share called users. Then add folders off of the users share, this restricts access to the root. And makes it easy for the admin to backup users shares. I hope this is what you are looking for.

I am wondering if this is a Guardian OS version issue maybe? The Software end of things is not my area, but the OS version is the first thing that came to mind.

We are using Active Directory. I have Guardian 4.0.228 and am upgrading to SP2, to see if that fixes the problem. I also have an e-mail in to adaptec support to get 4.4 that came out a few days ago. I've read the release notes for the OS upgrades and don't see anything related to AD, but am hoping for the best.
I could easily enough create local users on the snap and have AD change those when password changing time comes around, but I want it to work correctly. From what I've read in the userguide, I am doing everything correctly and it should be working. I'm hoping that there's a setting on the Snap that I'm missing or a setting on our AD server that needs to be changed. |
