In the middle of replacing a drive on my SNAP 4100, the power supply now makes an absolute racket on power up. Sounds like bad bearings on the fan.
The power supply is is an MPW-6150F, 150W +/- 5v out. So I go online to search... there are direct replacement parts, but only 60W. That's probably good enough doing some math with the drive's specs (say, 4 drives at 4.5W each plus fans and CPU) but... I'd like a second opinion... There had to be a reason it was 150W in the first place... Perhaps I can just replace the fan on the power supply? |

Just change the fan. Do it before it fails otherwise you may fry the PS.

I did find a direct replacement. Almost.
The replacement power supply goes for about $35. The unit under the same part number includes a power switch next to the fan and (ATX?) power plug, but mine has no power switch, and there's a plate on the chassis over the area where the switch would protrude... I still may be able to sneak the unit into the chassis, but then may not be able to turn it on and off conveniently. For $35 I've ordered the part, I'll post what happens... I have to be careful I don't waste too much time on this. |

Yep, I received my power supply, and as suspected, it would not fit.
EXACT same part number on both (MPW-6150F), one has a power switch, the original part from the SNAP does not. Also the wiring harnesses were not the same. SNAP tech support said the new part should work... hmmm. So I cannibalized the fan from the new into the old and my SNAP powered up quietly. Now I am having trouble getting it to accept the new drive. I inserted it as a hot spare, rebuilt the raid and that went fine. Disk status said RAID was good... but I could not see the disk contents. So I tried a reboot, and got a failure on the disk check at reboot. Am now running a full check with repair, my next step is to reformat and rebuild the entire array. The new disk is much bigger, but it is not in seat #1 and therefore should work. |

Snap OS does not support Hot Swap. They do not like that at all. You must always power down when changing drives.
All 4100 have the HD sets as Master or single drive. And I highly recomend using server drives. These all have min seek times. If you have not already done so, check to see if your MB has had the mod posted at the top of the threads. This is required for all 4100 240gig models and larger.

Most certainly it was powered down for the surgery.
It's running OK now, RAID is OK, but a different drive is throwing off errors during the disk check, so I've been warned. I'm going to buy a few more of the replacement drives, now that I know what I'm doing I can keep it going. Many thanks to the group. It's not the build that has the modifications, thankfully. Yes, server grade drives. FYI, Adaptec went and sold me a drive for $300 that I can get on line for $72 (WD1600SB), gave me bad info on the power supply, so I don't think I'm going to bother with renewing their "contract" again once these things go off warranty. But it was reasonable to bring the SNAP back to life myself, so I will probably buy another, our IT is not happy with ANY RAID servers these days. I'm looking at the 410 and 4200 U1's... any thoughts? |

The 410 are the newest model with SATA Drives, hot swapable. I believe these are AMD chips
The 4200 is a older model with IDE drives. also hot swapable. Intel. You should beable to upgade the 410 to higher cap servers drives. 250gig is the largest IDE Server drives I could find. SATA are up to 500+gig. Adaptec has anounced that they were going to start building hardware that requires you to buy HD's from them. For some reason they think buying HD's from other sources are not as good as the ones they sell. Soon after Adaptec bought SnapAppliance the Maxtor drives starting showing up. They think they can sell more parts, yes, but for the cost of reliability. One thing I would check and specify that they use WD SE HD. If I received a new 410 or 4200 and it came with Maxtor's I would send it back. They are just plane cheap and not reliable. Both run the Guardian OS, Check to see if they have dual gig ports.
