The PATA/IDE Interface is the limiting factor. The last time I checked 500g were the largest for this interface. The 1T were SATA. The 4500 has a PATA/IDE interface....
If the HD is made by Maxtor I would not waste your time and money on them, they are junk. I like Western Digital Interprise HD's, these are design for servers and will a lot longer and come with a 5yr warranty. Seagates are ok, but the last ones I got had a seek problem, which kills a raid 5 performance.

Ah well, They are a little expensive, £50 yo £70 for 1 500gb disk, when i can get a 1tb sata for the same price, dont think it compares, i think ill have to scrap the snap idea and just stick 4 drives in an old pc chassis and put freenas on it....

There was one user that used the SATA to PATA converters. He had to move a few parts so they could fit, but worked. He said you could not tell any difference. You can put cheap drives in, that what Adapted does. It's your call and if you need max performance.

Yes, those are the converts. Take note to limited space, he had to move a cap(?) on the sled, vert to horz to make every thing fit. I don't know what he did to get every thing in the small space. You way want to see if you can find the thread.
Once you convert to SATA the IDE restriction is lifted. The current restriction is that mfg are not make HD capacity over 500gig in ide. If they made 1T in ide the 4500 could handle it just fine. Some one may but I did not find it. I did not look at Samsung or some other lines. The Ironic of all of this is that the IDE is converted to SATA, atleast on the expansion units.
