Snaps are widely used for backup, That is my main uses. You can use any program that supports network shares or MAP drives. As long as you have access to the snap share it will work. For XP I have been using SyncToy by microsoft, FREE.
You backup program must reside on the PC. The only programs that can run on the Snap is Snap Extension and/or Java script. Make sure your unit has be modified, as one of the Sticky threads shows. If not your snap will not be stable. If you can locate a new version (4.0.860) of the OS. I would recommend installing it. It corrects a lot of problems.

While I am sure the software and networking gurus might have a different opinion (and may feel free to correct me)......
The SNAP Server is basically 3 things, 1) a file server, 2) a web server, and 3) an FTP server. But, in short terms, it is an NAS device (Networked Attached Storage). You can use it to back up or host your files/data, that is what it is made for. But the software to do so must be on your client computers for the most part. If you not sure take a high rez photo and email it to me. I will confirm it for you.
I do not have any linux pc's running at the moment. So I cant help you there. But most any will work as long as you can set up a schedule. One thing I recommend for any new users is to fail a HD and see what the recovery process is. It allways better to test your system before putting it in service. Another thing to look at is to see if all of the HD's have the same starting point. If it was upgrade and had a hd failure early on, the starting points may be different as well as the drive size. But simply remove the array and re formating the drives clears up the problem.

Your 4100 has had the modification done, so it should have no problem with stability.
It sounds like the v4 is the patch and not the full install. Try installing it through Assist.

Requires entitlement for the OS, if your unit is not in warranty or service contract.
