I have put my two 4400's running 3.2.025 into service as FTP servers, and they are doing great, but I really REALLY don't like the fact that they give out as much information as they do when you connect:
c:\>ftp 10.11.1.2 Connected to 10.11.1.2. 220 ProFTPD 1.2.9 Server (Snap Appliance FTP Server) [SNAP2244398] User (10.11.1.2:(none)): With that information, a would-be hacker has a whole lot of useful info on potential weaknesses. Does anyone know if that can be edited? Thanks Brian |

There is a file in the /etc directory that you can edit, the file is only accesable via ssh (putty). Do a search using redhat's manual. It will give you the exact name of the file. This file is use on most all linux OS.
If your looking for more security you need to upgrade to v4. Also move the port access to something >1024, local users will still use 21.

That's the info I was looking for.
The ftp server being proftdp, the config file is /etc/proftpd.conf, and the message file is welcome.msg, which doesn't exist -- that explains the chatty message -- it's using the default. Logged in as admin, I still have 'su' to be able to change the file. However, when I change the proftpd.conf file, the changes don't show when I connect using ftp. If I reboot the Snapserver, the changes are undone; it's like I never edited the file. Any ideas? |

Did you stop the demon before editing and saving changes?
I think the ftp service may be running in a sandbox.
