hi can someone help, we have a quantum guardian 4400, which i think is the same as a snap 4400, which was working fine until we moved location and our network ip changed and as we could not remember the password we thought we can reset the password by removing the bios battery but now the system will not boot up . can someone tell us the process to get the operating system loaded
many thanks michael |

Don't have a 4400, but the 4500 Guardian unit should be close.
The battery only cleared the BIOS settings. You should need to go in to the bios and check your settings. Make sure the watchdog is active. If you have a failed drive, it will boot the next one. Snap defaults to 10.10.10.10 if a DHCP server is not found, and not staitic. Have you tried assist to locate the unit, or Snap Server Manager. The 4500 has a com port for connecing a terminal. The 4500 is 115k N,8,1. May need to see what the 4400 is. I think it's different.... If you have a spare router , setup it match your old system. Then connect to the admin page and change the IP settings. I have started using DHCP/IP Mapping. This way if moved it will boot. And I can still keep it set on one IP like static.

Strange, I have a 4400 and it should not have caused it to do that. As David already said, it would have cleared the BIOS, but the default settings should have booted and should not have affected DHCP settings either (that is set in the OS, not the BIOS).
Look for it on the LAN with Snap Manager, or check your router (or device used for DHCP) and see what IP it is being assigned. Also as David said, the default is 10.10.10.10 if it does not get an IP assigned. The COM port settings David mentioned are set in BIOS. Of course, with no video, all this BIOS stuff is not going to be just a 1,2,3 type deal. Note for David: The 4400 does not have a Video, PS2 Keyboard, or PS2 Mouse port. It only has the GB ports and USB ports. This makes problems much more difficult to solve (but not impossible). Maybe another unit for me to play with? ![]()

hi
thank you for a promt reply, hi i can access the unit via hyper terminal set to 11500 n 8 1, and i can see the unit boot up , going through the bios picking up all the drives then comes back with "fail to boot from all devices system hang !" now i have tried the reset button on the back but no joy pulled all the drives out and tried one disk at a time, no joy i take it that the os is on the hard drive ??? i have not tried the network access how do i load the operating system on this ?? or is there something else i can try there is an option to press F1 to get into bios but it requires a password, does anyone know the default password the amber led flashes , it must mean something to someone ?? many thanks |

My 4500 had no password on the bios.
You should go into bios and activate the watchdog function. This will force the snap to try all drives for a working drive. Once watchdog is turned on, a timer will start after a boot failure. After 5 min it should reboot off of the next drive. Continuing till all drives have been tested. If that fails: During the terminal monitor there should be an option for diaster recovery. This will allow you to reload the OS. This is the GSU file in the 100+meg range. If you have the CD's that came with the unit you should have a copy of what was shipped with it.

funny you should ask "if you had another on" , let me explain we have two units and both were working at our old site and since we did not have the password and did not know about the reset button we removed the battery on both, before the battery removal the unit booted up and asked for a login followed by password, and we tried every password in our list, then thought there’s no harm in removing the battery, hindsight , bad move , should have done it on one first, yeh....
From this, all I can come up with is that there must be an option in bios where it says boot from this disk or that and that settings gone to default ?? And I think I can get it to work if I can get into the bios. There is also another option that comes up at the beginning press <spacebar> to invoke remote bios flash and on pressing that it says upload new bios file using xmodem protocol have pasted capture text [0;37;40m Press <SpaceBar> to invoke remote BIOS flash. Well, I have seen this come up now 5 or so times. This appears to be a BIOS Setting problem (boot devices).
The problem is, getting into the BIOS. It is that damn password they have as a default in the BIOS keeping us out. With the 4400 getting older now, more and more CMOS batteries are failing in units (or get pulled to be replaced) and poof, the default settings don't work and a once functional unit will now not boot. This is becoming more and more common, we need to find an answer. WE NEED THAT BIOS PASSWORD! DOES ANYONE KNOW THE SYSTEM DEFAULT BIOS PASSWORD FOR THE GUARDIAN 4400 SNAP SERVER? Thank you...

It's the same as your admin, unless it's the latest v4.4.049 then I don't know. I think adaptec locked root access out.
