Hi All,
My SNAP 4500 GOS 4.4.049 SP3 just reported a degraded RAID 5 (Slot 3 shows 'Disk OK' but no details or data) after an intentional reboot. I have the original Maxtor 7Y250P0 drives. When I try to repair the raid I get the message 'There are no disks with enough free space to repair this RAID Set. We need at least 236,205 MB to repair the set.'. This is my first experience with a RAID failure and the manual says I can hot swap a new drive. Can anyone point me to the most recent thread/link to follow for this fix before I start? I assume I will need to purchase a replacement drive and any suggested sources are appreciated. Thank you in advance. |

With Snap servers yoiu can hot swap HD that failed. Doing so will auto prepare the HD and start the re-sysnc. YOU MUST DO THE HD THAT HAS FAILED. IF YOU REMOVE THE WRONG HD THE RAID IS NOT RECOVERABLE.
If you replace the HD from a power down, you must go into the Disk utility and set the HD as a spare. Doing so will start the resysnc. The disk utility should report which HD has failed. The replacement HD should be the same mfg/mode/size. You can always go larger but not smaller. On the 4500 the HD's should be set as Single HD or Master. I do not like Maxtors HD they are time bomb waiting to happen. I have seen them fail with in days/weeks of each other, so don't delay in replacement.

Is the 250gig WD2500SB RE hard drive the best choice for replacement of the Maxtors on my snap 4500?
On other threads, 500gig drives were suggested. Has anyone used a specific PATA model? Thanks. Last edited by timt; 05-29-2009 at 02:56 AM. |

Those HD are in my 4500. WD, Samsung or Seagates have been good. Maxtors are only good for target practice, cheap junk. But you need to run SpinRite on the NEW HD to build the bad sector table. This will also see if a HD has a Seek problem. If it does it will impact the server performance.

I noticed the other day my snap 4500 was degraded when i check it out
all the drive were green but the 3rd drive had no info on it (size etc) the drives where all 160 gig EIDE unable to find an EIDE we purchased a 160 gig PATA assuming the snap would reject it if it was not compatible installed the drive set it to a spare and began rebuilding around 50 60% the rebuild failed restarted the snap began rebuilding and IT was almost finished when it failed again this time the 1st hard drive was reporting it had failed if it was almost finished rebuilding can i now replace the 1st drive? not sure what is going on also my assistant did some checking and was told the drive need to come from snap they are telling us some software needs to be installed on the drive first I'm not really buying that OS version is 4.0.228 Any suggestions |

The HD do not need to come from Snap/Overland on a 4500. It's best to match the same HD that are in the unit, with the same firmware if possiable. This is where sna/overand can help due to volume buying. Avertec was the owner that switched for WD to Maxtor to save a buck. They just want to charge you 5x the price and say they checked the HD. My guess is that you have Maxtor HD's. I have seen these fail all at about the same time. I have had several new HD that failed when raid was being built, like yours. I NO longer use them on anything, to light for boat anchors.
If I recall HD's 1 & 3 are on the same controller on the 4500. I would run SpinRire on the all of the HD's. YOu must remove the HD from the 4500 and install in a PC with NO HD installed for this. I say NO HD because if windows sees it, it will screw it up. It's better to just remove the windowns HD and install the hd you want to check. On the new ones it will built the bad sector table, which may save you on a HD reporting bad. The SMART tech will normally take care of this but it throws the timing way of it it has multiple sectors bad in a row. This is where it could have failed. Remove the top and Confirm all fans are working. The top must be on for circulation to work correctly. I jst put a book over the cpu and blower if i'm going to have the top off for extended time. I had to replace the main blower on the cpu a couple of years ago. If the data must be had I would try to contact Snap-tech. He can do a recovery for you at an resonable price. I would invest in SpinRite if you do not have a copy. He can be hard to reach at times though.
