Did your silicone tubing absorb the water wetter in your system ?
i'm having a hard time choosing what tubing to buy. who has silicone tubing, did it absorb all the water wetter or what ever additive you had in your coolant ?

it absorbed much of the color
but it still inhibits corrosion and it still is an algaecide which are the reasons for which I use it (3.5gal system changed every 6 months) |

you don't even need to poll people. Silicon tubing will absorb water wetter everytime. Makes your hoses a nice pink color =]

For the record, Todd DOES prefer his hose pink. He says it accentuates his pretty dress...

I have noticed that when I use the proper ammount of Water Wetter (ie a very small concentration) the silisone does not absorb it into the walls. However when I first started water cooling and used too much I got some perdy pink tubing in my system. Also I have noted Dye-Lite does not seem to be absorbed, even in too large a concentration.

I'm thinking bout getting tygon, it's not THAT expensive.
the most I can see using would be $10 feet.. be sure to get the thick wall.. some1 in pro chat was selling the thickwalled stuff yesterday (they bought 50 feet of it)

yeah-
My tubes are pink forever. Does Tygon (lab quality) absorb? I mixed mine according to Danger Dens instructions, 4 oz to one gallon of distilled. Jim Last edited by Jim; 04-10-2002 at 11:05 AM. |

well it does depend on the water wetter. the synthetic Redline or purple stuff seem to.
the green stuff I used in DH3 does NOT react with silicone from what I found.

How about Royal Purple? Anyone ever try using that instead of WaterWetter with silicone? Did the hose turn purple? If it's only absorbing the coloring, the purple is a different color, maybe it doesn't absorb it..

i was using a piece of silicone in my system with water wetter
the tubing did turn pink BUT i was trying to get rid of the stuff growing in my system so i started over with new tubing, and a new piece of silicone. but this time a added alot of 91% isopropyl alcohol. maybe 1/2 cup+ to my 1/4 gallon system. over the course of a month there was barely ANY pink in the silicone not sure why this happened but its something to think about. |

huh? wouldnt that be just like saying the water absorbed the water wetter?
watter wetter is still in the lines.. so its still available for absorbing. im sure that there is probably some chemistry to this.. maybe one of these chemicals is really polar, attaches itself to the other chemical, and then makes it impossible for silicone to absorb it due to repulsion or just the size of it. wonder if this still keeps down corrosion AND temps AND bio growth..... this is all stuff that i couldnt figure out, but if someone gave the answer i would understand ![]() |

Well, I suspect, among other things, that it may have something to do with alcohol's hydroscopic properties. If you mix a cup of water and a cup of alcohol and shake it up well, you end up with less than 2 cups of liquid. Some of the water is held between the molecules of alcohol. Likely it has a similar effect on the dye. It probably holds the dye in solution well enough that it's more attracted to the alcohol than to the silicone.

hey cool, i'll just add a bit of alcohol, it's a great biocide too, also you dont need 4oz to a gallon like the bottle says, you only need like 2oz

the ammount i added was a very rough estimate... i could have easily doubled the ammount of isopropyl.
so if you add alcohol to the mix.. wouldnt that basically make the mixture more dense? and at the same time wouldnt this increase performance compared to straight water? |

not unless alcohol has better heat transfer properties than water...

this was a statement, not a question.. i used like 1/3-1/2 of that bottle.. hell that could be a cup of alcohol... im just sayin that using ALOT of alcohol resulted in less RedLine absorbtion... i used small ammounts before, and that didnt do anything... you need to use alot |

I'm using all Tygon tubing (thin-wall, but that shouldn't matter except to make it even easier to see through/see if it's absorbing anything) and when I filled the system it was distilled water + 3% water-wetter. After about 2 days of running all the fluid in the system was completly clear again, and the tubing was still clear as well. So I put a small amount more waterwetter into my fill-tube (which is my tiny res) and after about an hour of mixing (fill tube isn't part of the cooling loop) my system had a nice pink look again. I don't know where the first water-wetter went (or if it even did go somewhere, or just the color in it did), but I'm assuming that with all the copper surface area in my system and the very small volume of coolant, that I didn't have enough volume of waterwetter to coat/protect all of the surfaces from corrosion.
Anyways, no silicon in my setup, but I do seem to slowly lose waterwetter somewhere. The Tygon is still perfectly clear. |

Yeah, I am still losing fluid with silicon tubing, haven't installed the tygon I ordered about a month ago, no time.
So you are losing fluid with TYGON as well. Sorry to hear this. Have no clue as to why the pink disappears on you? Jim |
