Tonight i was driving tests on my freshly bridged 1GHz AXIA TBird, with a good ol' ALPHA PAL6035MUC. While putting the case back on the ground the shock ripped the ALPHA out of the processor core. It was then leaning on a corner.... Which i found later when i detected the smell of burned thermal grease

Too late.
I'm ordering another AXIA right now

With a copper shim this time...

ewwww, shims are the devil. . . if you have to use a shim then you shouldn't be doing any extreme OCing and stick with a simple HSF. Even Joe will concur with me on that one. You just need to be kinder to your computer and make sure your HSF is securly fastened.

The shim would not have saved your CPU, your more likely to cook your bird with a shim than without.

Duh, i already paid for it anyway. Why would i cook the tbird ? As long as the shim is slim enough... Some ppl say it even enhance heat transfer to HSF or WB.
So whats the real deal with those copper things ?

you should think about what it does...its supposed to be a certain hieght...the hight of the cpu, but that height was probably measured 1000x more accurately than that of the shim maker. also, how can a shim transfer heat better? and why use coper over say...aluminum? because it wouldnt make any difference...the thing doesnt do anything. its just a gimmick.

watch out cuz una's gonna give you some much better reasons

Dont use a Shim, they are evil and essentially training wheels...

Except most companies dont know anything about QA right now so they are rarely the perfect height and cause more CPU deaths then anything else.

OK here's an idea.
I can test run the shim using inexpensive thermal paste.
The idea is, i fit the shim over and put some paste on the core. Then i take a perfectly flat surface (like the bottom of an ALPHA or my lapped WB) and i sweep it over the processor. If all the paste is swept i can consider the shim is slim enough.
If there's some residue i can lap the shim a bit more, then try again...
Overall the shim could transfer heat from the ceramic surface to the base of the cooler. This way heat is spread all over the base (which belong to us anyway

) and the result is a greater contact area.
Some HW sites tested perfect shims and had better (=lower) temp readings.
Now if you ppl have tried 'perfect' copper shims and had disastrous results.. well... just tell me why. And no 'copper shims are evil' plz

i know you can have quite valid reasons...
