Default What do you reckon about this power supply?

If you go to www.cpc.co.uk and type in PW01363 into the quick search. What do you reckon about the 20A power supply for powering pelts? I thought it looked quite good for the money

Not much in the way of details there. Looking closely at the picture shows the front panel of the display model saying "6A continuous 8A surge", so it looks like the 20A unit can do 20A continuous, which is good. 3.5Kg isn't the lightest 20A supply by any means, but it's not excessively heavy (my 3-15V 25A bench supply is 9Kg iirc). The price is very nice. I'd say go fo it, bargain at twice the price (literally).

Well, it's a switching supply, which means it's more efficient than a simpler wall adapter (as if one existed, capable of outputting 20 amps!!!).

I can't remember the conversion rate, but isn't 35 pounds something like 70 USD? If that's the case, I think you can do better.

The specs would be nice, like, what's the output tolerance? Ripple voltage? Not that it matters much. How do you hook into those ports anyways?

bigben: for a 20A switching supply you're usually looking at £70-200 over here. £35 is damn good.

yeah I was thinking it was a good price. Things in this country are really expensive compared to America. ie if it is $200 over there it will probably be about £200 here.

It's a good price but you'd be better off with an ATX PSU for any TEC. The build quality on an ATX PSU is much greater. They are extremely safe PSUs in terms of reliability and performance. They also have a great advantage over that bench power supply: An ATX PSU is started electronically which means it can be controlled by a computer. It's possible to buy an ATX with more current for the same price (or less). My company makes an ATX Starter which automatically switches on/off an external ATX PSU when your computer is powered (the ATX starter is £15).

Wa_Juk,

in case you missed it, there's a WBTA forum member that's got an "in" on used equipment. If it's any help, and because you're a WBTA member, I'll volunteer to facilitate the transaction (purchase & shipping).

Cheers bigben. I thought it would be unlikely that there would be any stuff suitable for 240 v though

You never know: you might come across a dual input voltage unit.

I haven't heard from "vonk" in a few days: hopefully he didn't run away!

ATX PSUs are built as cheaply as possible. I'd go with a dedicated switching supply over an ATX any day. Besides, most of the ATX power output is on the 3.3V and 5V lines, while TECs need 12-15V. So you end up massively overspeccing the PSU just to get enough 12V current.
