I dunno but it sounds kinda stupid to me, you could probably get as good transfer with Arctic Silver.

I'm currently running my 1.2@1.34(141x9.5)
1.85v max heat is 107 F I am using Artic Silver and a WBK 38 The reason i want to sand the slug is b/c the slug is NOT flat at all. and the words stamped into the top have got to be a little restrictive. |

Eeek.. I sure wouldn't do it to my chip.. If you end up doing it, let us know how it goes..

1. you got balls
2. I was thinking the same thing about the lettering tonight 3. Cores are flat besides for the laser burned lettering there isn't any imperfections in the core that would make it warped. ( the core cant be warped cause the platters have to be perfectly flat to be etched properly) Sanding your core is ... insane and pretty unessesary. just use an ultra thin coating of AS or ASII and it will fill the lil recesses made by the text burning process, and thats all you need.

Thanks for the input guys.. I'll wait till I hear of someone else doing it first. .... err second thought if I cant find anything on it in a couple weeks.. i'll try it out. It would'nt be the first 1.2 that i've hosed!
(do not use a superorb(yuck) with a copper shim) |

Do not use a copper shim - period. And hell, if you want to kill your CPU, I'll trade you for my green 750 before you start.

Why not use a shim? I have one on mine now and it seems to work just fine.

mother of mercy ,
if you don't know why not to use a shim, you really need to reconsider overclocking. Shims are the DEVIL! The biggest reason why Shims are evil is that they are a false security blanket, they don't do anything productive other than give you a false sense of security. Since shims can't be manufatured to your EXACT chip, there is a garaunteed chance of it being a little to thick or a little to thin for your chip. On top of that there can be a discreptancy in height on the different sides of the shim. If to big the heatsink won't contact the core and will have it's performance hindered. If to thin then the shim was worthless since you can still crack your core. if lop-sided the heatsink won't fully contact slug and there will be air pockets. Shims don't do anything other than increase your cores tempurature. I know I have tried two different shims on my computer, each time I gained about 2-3 degrees C. there is no point in using them. oh, I guess that will do for now,

Better than using shims:
Protect your CPU I've done this with my last 3 AMD chips, no cracked cores so far. No increased temps, either. It also makes it easy to lap my CPU. I just lap the whole thing and the CPU gets perfectly flat. You don't think the lettering on AMD cores makes a difference, think again! Lapping decreased my temps 2C.

I lapped my 1.2 that did 1.46, and 1.1 that did 1.35. AXHA and AXIA respectively. But I burned them both out because I forgot to put the waterblock on both of them at one point or another. Currently switching to intel with 600E@900 tested (used) and a couple BE6-II's to experiment with, also a 550E@825 tested (used). Ill post up OC results

lap it lap it!
i've lapped three tbirds, no problems. works best with 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper using wd40 as lube. just take it nice and easy, you should have no problems. |

something else to watch out for with shims...excess thermal paste has a tendency to get underneath the shim, raising the shim up, and decreasing contact with the core
