Hi there.
I am right now looking for some software that detects if any pc is sharing files at a lan, and in case it is true, it sounds an alarm with the name of that pc. Thats because at our lan we are limiting sharing trough dc++ to stop users from overloading the lan, and removing the pleasure of the guys playing games, with the high pings they get. I tried googling, but i was unable to find any software capable of doing what i want, or anithing near it, but since this forum has proven many times to have a large number of knowledeable ppl, i am here asking if you know any kind of software like this, or, if you know of any way around this problem. Yes, limiting the speed at programable switchs would be perfect, but we dont have acess to those kind of hardware. Joe, you, the all-mighty lan maker, could you give a hint? And btw, at ebay, how cheap can i get switches with 24 ports 10/100?

with many manged switches, allow only the game ports needed, even stops web traffic if desired
doesn't do what you asked, but stops the file sharing cold |

pfff, a lan without file sharing? no tanks!
it must be a software solution, so restriction is during competitions, but free traffic is enabled at some time. |

A lan w/o filesharing? thanks for the warning I wont goto any of yours. Thats half the point!!!
telling people they cant share files during a match is a good idea, usualy people will obey. having a good gig switch at the top of your network eliminates the problem. The last lan I was at had almost 600 people. Filesharing went on constantly but with their gig switch at the top.... no lag problems ever. |

I should have been more specific:
No NORMAL sharing on this lan. That is FORBIDEN. Sharing will be done trough a dc++ server, wich limits the speed at wich ppl can download, so that it doesnt choke the network. Of course, there will be always some assguys, who will keep sharing stuff only for a friend to get it faster, and somethings like that, and all the lan users will suffer with lag from them. I want to try and stop them. want to share? use dc++ Can anyone help?

Still sounds fairly stupid.
I'm not sure how many people you are dealing with, but if you have ~ 100 people playing at once you need LESS than 20 Mb/s dedicated for them. Game playing is more sensitive to the propogation delay due to the # of hops and the overall (internal) speed of the switches. The typically network utilization isn't all that high, even with lots of file sharing.

I will have to disagree with you.
Yes, i only need 3.5 mb, and not 20, for ppl to have good pings. The problem is, everibody shares and downloads stuff on the lan at the same time. That makes delays getting bigger while the switches are processing the downloads, and 50-60 ping is unaceptable at a lan that is, mostly, for playing. They choke themselves, and the users playing the games. Want to share/download? fine, but with our rules and with the speed we allow them to. However, wise guys dont take this seriously, and ignore us making the lan barely reasonable for the ones who want to play. I understand its funnier to have than new Pr0n in 2 minutes instead of 10, but we cannot provide gigabit switches, since our supporters dont borrow those. Back on topic: Anyone knows the software? I would hate to search each and every pc to check if they are sharing stuff once and a while...

How about this...
Get a wireless router ($50?) that is NOT connected to the game LAN, and require everyone that wants to share files bring some sort of wireless adapter to connect to the wireless router. Then, everybody will be sharing files via wireless, and the gaming will proceed without a hitch.

I dont know anymore...
I think im gona go for a run and try to get managed switches. Old 100mb switches... That should do the trick... Anyway our dns/dhcp server, who provides the IP's, can it be configured only to provide an IP if the computer does not have anithing shared? Or, can it limit the speed of such IP? Gotta research more... ---> www.google.com

I gotta jump in here again.
If you are getting 50-60ms ping times on a lan you have some serious issues. Probably crappy switches - they are not all made equal. Yeah, its possible that you are flooding out the buffers and enough packets are getting dropped to push up the ping - possible but not really likely. At a certain level, low pings will NOT help you. I can't remember how low it is - but sub 20ms is probably no extra help, unless your servers are so badass that they are processing and sending packets that often. Partly game dependent but 20ms is a good goal. Back to 50-60. If you are getting delays of this magnitude on a LAN you are either running into massive buffer restrictions, a huge bottleneck somewhere, or bad hardware. A few dodgy network cables or switches can easily pump the ping up due to tcp retransmission requirements. And if you are doing datalink layer retrans then you can have even more problems. I'd take a look at the hardware again and see whats going on there.

Huge bottleneck? could be the uplink...
Whats a datalink layer retransmission? The switches they are old, but good, except this one that i bought, i dont know if it is alright, but it has good features: http://www.ovislink.com.tw/2402gt.htm Well maybe its the uplinks and im gonna look at them. But this happened with a lan of 47 ppl, with a new one of 95 i guess its gonna get worse, although we have a 24 gigabit switch for backbone. What the hell, Ppl arent there to play or share, they are there for the b*tches im sure ![]() EDIT: btw, nothing about the software right? ![]()

software - nothing I can think of.
If I wanted to block people from sharing, I'd just go into the router and block the ports. That would stop most of it - if not all of it. That switch looks okay. Layer 2 refers to the 7 layer OSI model - the 2nd layer is the physical layer. Its basically the part that actually tells the hardware to transmits some bits. If you have a dodgy cable (or 2) AND layer is doing error detection then you will have alot of additional interswitch transmissions. This is bad, because most games are UDP and don't want you to do retransmission. Late packets should just go away. Sorry, didn't want to go too far off on a tangent. If you have decent switches, then check and recheck and re-recheck all the cables. You might have some NEXT (near end cross talk) or some other interference causing issues.

Tempus:
The "router" that we have is a DHCP/DNS software server, with windows 2003 server. We are going to look at it this night, trying to find how to block ports this way, we hope we can do it. WinRoute can do it, but i would prefer to do it trogh the built-in software of windows, gonna check internet if we can find a How-to. Anyway, i have asked a guy here to make me this program i am looking for, if he is able to do it and he alllows me to post it here, i will share it with you guys. Thanks all.
