Depends what flow rate you are looking for but I don't think you can beat an Eheim, Should be able to get an Ehiem 1250, 264GPH, (317 US GPH), for around $60 to $70 and it can be used either inline or submersed.

Definate best is Eheim (it's the BMW of pumps). Only marginally quiter, and marginally more reliable than a Danner Mag-Drive however, and over twice the cost (due to limited importing).
If you don't have money to burn, you could check www.petsmart.com with the coupon listed in another thread for $10.00 off you first purchase and get a Mag-Drive #3 - 350gph for about $35.00 (or even the #2 250gph for $25.00). Flow rates are very comparable to Eheim 1250 (in fact a little higher), it accepts one NPT 1/2" male and one NPT 1/2" female thread (get either 1/2" or 3/8" barbs at home depot for $2.00) and your set. Mounts either submersed or inline. As for failure, a good friend that owns a pet store says either the Eheim or the Mag-Drive last very long, and when they get old what happens is the shafts for the impeller get loose and make noise, so you have a year of notice before they fail (in fact it's very rare one actually fails, usually they just get real loud). Then you just need a new shaft assembly the pump is as good as new for years again!!!

Does anyone know anything about Little Giant pumps? MECI.com has a 500GPH with 17' head rating for only $25, looked pretty good to me but I don't know anything about their reputation....

Little Giant makes awesome pond pumps. They're considered very reliable and durable in the pond industry. I'm not sure how that compares to the (what I think) more reliability critical aquarium market.
I think the units are shaft driven (but not sure) however, so unlike a good mag-drive which will only require an impeller assembly from time to time, shaft driven pumps just loose there shaft seal and take on water (failing). They indeed could however last just as long or longer. Some require oil lubrication, and most are large, but like I say my friend could only qoute pond use.
