My laptop runs 24/7, so someone might as well get some use out of the cycles that are otherwise devoted to running my starfield screensaver, and the occasional virus scan and such.

Before I forget to ask, are any of the clients faster than the others? Not including the Linux, which is probably faster than Windows but I don't have Linux on this machine right now (sharing it with my wife ATM). Is the Text client faster than the display or screensaver?

I guess the console application, installed as a system service would be slightly faster, because it doesn' generate any useless output (like visual images, reports, etc.), it just does its job.
But probably, the difference should be so small, you will only be able to notice it on the long term...

I've also read on F@H's site that the client console (text box) is faster. The F@H core program is suppose to be faster on a Windows based machine vs Linux because it was designed and optimized for Windows. I think it also makes a difference what type (AMD, P4 w/, w/o HT, Xenon, etc.) of cpu your using also.

My 64 bit has finished about 20% of its work so far, in approximately 8 hours or so. But, for the first while my system had done its usual worst, and somehow throttled down to a woeful 645 Mhz. I think I've got a BIOS fault or something, as this system will only run at 1.45 Ghz, rather than its rated 2.2Ghz.
Edit: I seem to get my z's mixed with x's occasionally...

Ok, is there any way to save my work done so far? I'm at 1750/2500 on my first WU and don't really want to lose it if I switch over to the text client.

I'm fairly sure you can just download the text console client into your folder that you have the GUI version in and run it from there. Make sure to quit your GUI version first. It should save to the last checkpoint and the text console should take over from there. If I'm off base on this, please somebody correct me.

FYI. It seems that our rate of earning points relative to our nearest competition is still at a high rate as of 10/30/04. Click thumbnail for larger image.

My system turned in its first work unit the other day, so I should be showing up sooner or later.

Most teams that put out 60,000 points a week are in the Top 100. We should be there by the end of February or so.

Linux box put in his first unit yesterday ...
Family PC has been repaired (turned out to be a failing PSU that killed both my HD and one stick of RAM ) and is folding as of today ...
(I'm climbing up the procooling ladder a bit )

Yes, we're doing great, considering the number of folders that are actively folding. But our rise to the top is slowing down... Which means we needs more folders!
How come not even 40 of us are folding on a forum with a few thousends of registered members?

Anyways, keep up the good work, we'll make it into the top 100 one day, i'm sure.

Default My first unit

Having found out about ProCooling's F@H team I thought I'd better swap over from SETI. I've not got the quickest computer but every little helps I guess... Perhaps I can overclock it a bit or build a quicker one>>>
What would be the best system for getting lots of FLOPS (I guess this is what F@H requires?). Something like a dual Opteron / dual Xeon? I want to build something quick cos I used to run finite volume CFD codes years ago at Uni and want to brush up on my programming and go back to College so I can get back into it...

We do need more folders. We should be near the top 100 right now and we aren't yet. We're only #160.

According to the Extreme Overclockers Overtake chart, we won't break into the Top 100 for about 6 months. That's disappointing.

Tnx for bumping the topic again ...
We definitely need some signups. you all WANT to see Procooling in that top 100 list, don't you? You all feel the NEED to make it happen. You WANT to show THE WORLD that Procooling is superior...

Are my hypnotic skills kicking into action yet? ... too bad

just joined the team
anyone know if folding is optimized for hyper-threading?
is it possible to run 2 instances of folding (one on each cpu) like in prime95?
because otherwise i'm gonna run folding at below normal priority and
2 prime95s at low priority
doing that; folding is getting 50% (25% on each cpu) and each prime95 is getting a varying portion of the remainder

Actually, I think hyper-threading is optimized for folding. Everything I've read states that a hyper-threading cpu with two instances of folding@home has the best performance (read WU per day).
You can also set priority and cpu % usuage for each instance. The client versions running as a service seem to work the best. I hope this helps.

Can a hyper-threading P4 run two work units simultaneously then? I read the article on F@H about a dual processor machine being able to run two instances, as long as you set the two root directories differently etc but it never even crossed my mind to try to run two on a single HTd CPU. I've got GBs or Ram so that shouldn't be a problem and even if it was I'd just stick some more in...
If I can run two F@H clients simultaneously where can I find out how to do it?
thanks, Nick
