Im a bit shocked! I went to fill up my res a bit more and looking inside the bottom is coated with a red/brown rust colour (plastic res!)
AFAIK all the metals I am using are: Copper, Silver, Brass, Solder - 95.5/4/0.5 Tin/Silver/Copper Solder - possibly 60/40 lead/tin Lastly some of the fittings are nickle plated brass - these are what I used in the res. Coolant mixture is de-ionised water + algycide. I assumed with the metals I am using there would be no need for corrosion inhibitors. The res is new - the rest of the part have all worked together before. Are nickle plated brass fittings usually a corrosion issue? The colour started to appear in the first few days (been running about a month). I ignored it untill now as I thought it was the glue (holding the res to the holder) that had discolured. The only other thing I can think of is if the fittings leaked - allowing the aluminuim holder to become part of the loop - but then that wouldnt make a brown coloured rust.

copper and silver are not a safe mix w/o inhibitors
what you see is the silver corroding the copper |

Edit: Ive found out one of the fittings was nickel plated steel - and so looked exactly the same as the brass ones. Im a bit annoyed that the shop sent me a steel one but then they look the same
![]() Added some corrosion inhibitor for now. Ill clean it out in a few weeks... Ive never had a problem before the res was added. I have been running my silver/copper waterblock for over two years where the silver has been in direct contact with the wetted copper - soldered together (using the 4% silver solder awell). Ive never noticed any problems with the silver and copper before. If the silver/copper are reacting, then its something compleatly unrelated to this current issue where the fittings in the res have corroded. Based on this: http://www.corrosion-doctors.org/Air...eri-compat.htm I dont see why nickel would cause a problem.. ideas? Silver->brass is 0.3v which as you say could be a problem, but I have yet to notice any. I will be replacing the silver base of the gpu block soon anyway with a copper base which should perform a lot better ![]() The highest potential would probably be solder about 0.65v. Again, not noticed that getting corroded...and I have a lot of soldered joints in my loop. I think the nickel plating must have just came off. Not a big issue, I disassemble everything and clean it in about 3 weeks.
