Okay, there seems to be little posted here about S2S (SNAP to SNAP). So......
Does anyone have any info about either version 1 or version 2 S2S? Has anyone used either/both? What were your experiences with it? Good? Bad? Limitations you found? What can and cannot be done with it? Etc. AND, a big question for me, once installed, can it be removed? Anyone? Any info? |

I could try it, one would assume though that on 100mbt units it would take a LONG time to sync them up though.

Got your email Pheonix, should have some time later today to try and help you out
I know v1 can be removed, its a be of a hacked way to do it, ive done it by connecting via FTP to the root of the drives, and just deleting the files I think i used to just delete the JVM folder and then reinstall the JVM

I have used it to copy ~340GB from a 705N to a 4000. Took some time on a switched 100Fdx connection but worked perfectly. IIRC it was version 2 but need to check that. Haven't tried removal but if java is disabled, none of the extensions show on the snap "info" popup window... Hope that is of some use to you. |

I tried S2S v2 on my 2 Snap 2000 devices. You get 45 day trial license when you download it from the SnapAppliance web site. It seems that each of the devices running the software (Snap Server or PC) needs to have a license.
Looking at the list of new jar files that appeared in the Java directory on my Snap server, it seems that v2 is using File Replication Pro (FRP) and they used Diasoft to do the binding work to bind the FRP into the Snap UI. Reading about FRP on their web site it seems that the backup/mirror support is more intelligent than V1, it only replicates the "bits" it needs, rather than all the files. This is a great plus. But that does not out weigh the fact that as I have non-GuardianOS Snap Servers I need to run a Windows based application to configure the replication jobs. What is worse is that I need to run the Windows service *continuously* for scheduled/repeated jobs, to manage the replication. This is a downside compared to S2S V1, which did not need an external client at all. As my house is a Mac house, S2S V2 is not a solution I can use. I only run Windows occasionally in Parallels when I need to. It is not something that I run continuously. I don't understand why Snap Appliance have limited themselves to Windows, when checking the FRP site, they have a Mac solution. Edit: You can switch to V1, by simply installing the s2sv1 sup file. It over-writes the v2 installation. Last edited by OzDave; 02-10-2008 at 06:47 AM. |
