Default Snap server 1100 replace defective drive without original driveimage

Hi,

Our companies Snap 1100 server died. The harddrive crashed completely without any option of recovering the original start image.

I've managed to get my hands on a new harddrive (120GB) and want to use it with the 1100 server.

I'm reading lots of articles where people have upgraded their snap using DD etc. But we haven't got a working original drive.

is there still a possibility to use this NAS or is it better of in the bin?

Thanks a lot

Greetings:

If you have read this forum, it gives you detailed instructions on how to use DD.

Click on link below for info on Snaps on how to
http://wiki.procooling.com/index.php/Snap_Server

You have a few options here:
1.) Find an image somewhere out in web land.(Don't ask here Adaptec monitors this site for such activities)

2.) You could also try and image the crashed drive you have now with DD to see if you can get the first 25MBs and try and transfer image to new 120GB. If that doesn't work(try if you can) then try and run some disk utility to correct any sector problem(s) on the hard drive then try doing the image again. Most ppl here subject Spinrite. It's good and I have used it for many years until I discovered HDD Regenerator which I think is a better program. Either or try one or the other or another.

3.) Buy another (working) Snap1100 off ebay and make an image using DD and transfer new image to your 120GB hard drive then install in you company's Snap1100 then put other Snap1100 on ebay.

4.) Sell the Snap1100 you have on ebay IF you don't want to mess with it at all.

If you are successful at making an image save it for later uses if this ever happens again you will have an image for your new drive.
Remember, hard drives do not last forever.

P.S. Others here might have other thoughts that could/would be helpful to your problem.

Thanks for your Reply..

Option 1 is search hell nothing to be found or I'm just using the wrong keywords
I hate the fact that we bought this device. Runs smoothly until the warranty expires, then dies.
I should be able to fysically swap the hdd without being in violation of anything

Option 2: I'll look into your software suggestions, but since I don't hear the drive spinning up.... I don't think that'll save me

3: Not an option no money in the bank

4: probably the last step, but who would want to buy a defective unit...

Thanks for your options and tips...

You could buy a cheap one at ebay on line from an individual. I've seen them go for under $75 all the time with a working HD and OS. If you do any type of swapping of hard drives etc to it... It will void your warranty from Adaptec or anywhere else. If you would like, as far as selling, there will be people who will buy it and refurbish it. You can also post it here in the Snap/NAS Classifides http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?f=84 before you try and sell it on ebay. It will save you some money as far as the listing cost etc... I don't know how much you will get for it, but I would guess it will not be that hight because of the lack of OS and HD. But it will sell to somebody who has the equipment to fix it.

Good luck on your search. I hope you are able to fix it.

Okay, so where do you locate this HH Regenerator? I would like to give it a tryout but, I did a search and it never came up anywhere.

Shoot me a link or an FTP or an email or a PM etc...

Just got back from being away. That is the correct link. I previously made a type-O. I use a combination of both Spinrite and HDD Regenerator. Depending on the situation at hand.
HDD Regen. is a very good program and I highly recommend. Read the info at the website and see if it is for you. They have a demo I believe that will scan your HD , but will not correct it. Doesn't matter what OS you have on your drive it will work.
