Default Free Proliant

muahahahaha

I just got me a free compaq proliant 1500 server with 4 4.3gig scuzzies in a raid array. Its only a dual p133 tho... maybe ill upgrade the ol socket5's to 166's or something... anyone have 2 old 166 non mmx chips layin around?

I might just pull one of the hotswap drives out to see what it does...

Or watercool the case, its a 5u rackmount badass

muahahahaa. ive got a Compaq pro Liant 4500, 8 pMMX 166mhz, 4 9.1gb scsi UW... Raw Powah! only one thing i do regret. why the heck did i foramt it. i lost the drivers for that compaq scsi cd-rom, but anyway. got another drive with NT4.0 server on it that i puit in. works great! one thing i hate about it, is, that it sounds like 4 DELTA EHE 60mm, yes, the 54CFM fans, in 60mm form factor..or something like hthat... hate it. its never turned on. but i like that case. might be a watercooling project some day...

Yeah, I named mine "tornado" just because it sounds like one. I was hoping the darn thing would be more upgradable (like just plugging in a new CPU card or something). Maybe the proliant line has the same motherboard formfactor and a really new mobo/cpu card will fit into the same case. The mobo's and cpu cards go pretty cheap on ebay.

heh, mines got 128 meg of ram and a 2meg onboard video adapter. Plus a bunch of EISA busses? I'm so glad i have a ton of those cards layin around

oh wait.. i dont.

Maybe its fast enough to brodcast streaming mp3's or somehting

bah, this thread just reminded me how close i was to scoring a quad pII xeon, 100gb scsi, 600w redundant hp file server for about $100. but the guy who owned it was a greedy bastard..

old stuff is fun, particularly when it is all proprietory, and half of it doesn't work

I'd be tempted to steal the psu/case and raid array out of it and throw the rest away

Pyro, it would ROCK if you had 2 p166's around. I dont yet know what to do with this machine, it has pci slots so maybe an mp3 broadcast machine would be in order. I wish it had some 3d power, then i could use it as a counterstrike server. Can you run a cs server w/o any real 3d performance, like in a "server only" mode?

Anyways, i dont want to chop it up because technically it isnt "mine" its still my relatives. Its PSU isnt an ATX so thats kinda out too.

you don't need 3d power to run a dedicated server. just download the software from www.counter-strike.net, install, set it up right and you're ready to go!

Is dedicated server an option within half life? I'm not running linux on this machine... mostly because i have no linux experience and Its already got Win2kPro Server Edition on it.

MeltMan:

You need no 3d power what so ever to run a dedicated CS server. Right now I can get a dedicated server running over terminal services built into Win2K Adv. Server at home. I just use the GUI to make my setting changes and select "Dedicated Server" and go. It will drop out of the GUI and start running in a DOS box. That's it!

Need anything else?

Nope, Thanks! I'm gonna go load it up now and see what it can do...

It should load maps fast since it is a nice scsi raid

Quite possibly but I wouldnt expect miricles from that old of a SCSI array

That proliant should make a good CS server. Once you have it up and running, tell us your servers IP. I LOVE a good CS tournament or just a great blood bath!!
