just a couple of questons as I plan out my wcing design
1.Just a question abour a res (inline) and how it works. do you cap the top and then just open it every once and a while to let the accumalated ait out? or do you leave it uncapped all the time leting any accumalated air out as it builds? 2.Is the via 1300 submersible , i ordered it from becooling assembled, and it only mentions it as being "good for inline". (i Plan on doing inline but am just curious about its capabilities.) Thanks again. |

This is what I do with my res. (what you do is up to you)
I made a new res. out of PVC pipe and it is ~1.5' long and 1.5" in diamiter. I have a cap on the bottom with a fitting comming out that goes driectly to the pump. I have another fitting about 3/4 up the res. comming off one side. I have a removeable cap on the top with a plug in the middle. I have found that if I try and cap off the res., it puts extra pressure on the res. and system (mostly worried about the res. leaking). If I leave the cap ON but the plug off, I loose about 1 inch of water ever 10 days (evaporation). I put the cap on and the plug in the cap but did not tighten it to capture most of the evaproating water. That had mixed results. I finally just left the cap on and the plug off and check the water every once in a while. Side Note: I have NO idea how hot my water is but I am sure that by adding another radiator to the bottom of my case, I can get better temps than I have right now and probably get rid of some of my evaporation probelms. Dont know about the pump.

no hes talking about a lid that acts like a float..maybe styrofoam that just barely will slip up and down in your res..moves with the water level

Exactly... it covers most of the surface of the coolant, thereby reducing the evaporation. It floats to allow for expansion, if any. You can also still refill the system, as that lid will float

you certainly dont need to do that. as air comes out of the system and into the res / airtrap, you just add more water. you dont need ALL the air out of the res..... |

Pressure in my system is the last thing I worry about (though i don't have a res - fewer places to leak). In fact, when I put additives in my system I increase and decrease the overall pressure of my system considerably in order to mix it. With the computer off (but the pump on - I just don't want to worry about temps/flow-rate during this) I grab as much of the tubing as I can at once, and squeeze it almost flat - causing the water-level in my air-trap-tube to rize a bunch, and causing the additive I put in in to mix around with the newly added liquid. Then (a couple seconds later - I'm not gonna damage the pump by stopping flow for a very short time) I release the tubing, and sqeeze the tube of my air-trap almost flat (or as much as I can without squeezing air down into the system). This forces as much of the concentrated mix as I can into the actual cooling loop. I repeat this a few times and then let the pump even the mix out, which seems to take a few hours for good even coloring. And so - I'd recommend just capping your res tight and sealing the system. If it fills up with air that you missed during the initial fill (which will happen - I don't think it's possible to get ALL the air out when you first fill it) - open the cap, top up the coolant again, and re-seal it. A good seal not only stops evaporation, but also keeps bacteria from getting in. (a seal won't stop bacteria in the system from starting to grow, but if no new organism's can get in it can't hurt).
And yes, the ViaAqua 1300 is submersible - I have one. And it runs well in-line - that is how I'm running mine. |

Moreover you wont get *more* air in your system. So at idle, the pressure in your res will be zero (relative). Air bubbles just move from your tubing to your res. They wont build up pressure there. Just think to refill from time to time (especially if you've got silicon tubing). While the system is active i wouldnt recommend an open res, for pressure purposes. |

it wouldnt hurt to open it. cornerjack showed that you can have an open res with no probs (not that any-1 would want an open res, im just saying i dont think it would be a problem).
