atx is a form factor, which covers everything from cpu positions to how the power supply is turned on.
the atx power switch is a momentary switch

Actually, it's a toggle switch...
A momentary switch is a switch that acts much like a doorbell button: momentarily on. |

You would have a momentary switch, if you have that type of connection to your PSU.
I use a Compaq computer here, and there's a momentary switch on it. I haven't opened it up (yet!) but I'm sure I'd find that it is connected to some little circuit board, either inside or outside the PSU, that activates a relay. I believe that the PSU we buy never come with that option though. As far as I know, they all have those 4 wires: white, black, brown and blue. The toggle switch links those to turn on the PSU. |

ATX has generally two switches. One in the back on the psu itself, and one on the case in the front. The one on the back is a toggle to actually physically disconnect the power from the outlet to the psu. The other switch is a MOMENTARY pushbutton switch. It basically just shorts the 5vsb with a ground and powers up the psu. But, there is a catch, the motherboard will have to hold the psu in the on state by keeping the 5vsb shorted with ground.
so simply put, its a normally open momentary pushbutton switch.

nah, im still here.
just my stupid hotmail keeps thinking ATX is a bad word ![]() i just finished reading the thread, and i think i should have been more clear about my question. im talking about the one that you plug into the motherboard. its 2 wires (white and green). i know about the master switch on the back of the PSU but that doesnt turn on the computer. now the switch i have on the case i have on there now (which i want to replace) sounds like its a toggle (like a click on/click off sound) but it springs back like its a momentary switch. so which is it, momentary or toggle? |

Momentary. Only connected when depressed. The Motherboard is in charge of telling the PSU when to turn on and turn off.

Mainly the big difference is the lack of a 3.3v line on an old AT PSU.
