Im in the market for a new screen for my pathetic little computer and wanted to know what monitors everyone had experience with. My mom and dad have a 19 inch Sony Aperature Grill (spelling?) monitor and I like it very much. Flat panels are out, because of my $300 price cap. But, for the money, what is the nicest biggest cheapest monitor you've ever used?
Thanks

It's not huge, but my new black NEC multisync FE771sb has a beaauuuutiful picture, i never knew the monitor made much difference till i got this. I can hardly even stand looking at my dad's old 17" non flatscreen anymore. there's a 19" version of this as well, and i really like it

Anyone have a Samsung 950b? They are dirt cheap 19 inch monitors at $170 shipped. Just wondering if they were curved like a sphere or something.

I have a CTX VL950 which is almost the same as that Samsung. However, I bought mine back in '98. It has the Hitachi tube that has a .26mm V and .22mm H pitch. If it is the same type of tube, I have not noticed too much difference between it and my (Dell) Sony 21" (Black monitor) at work, even though the Sony is a flat screen. I have been rather pleased with my CTX. Yes, my monitor has a curved screen, but it is not fish bowl. More like a regular 20" Sony TV screen.
I would check out other reviews with the Samsung before making a decision. I know that in 1998 Samsung was considered a price/quality leader for the 15-19" monitors. I don't know if that is true anymore. -phosphor |

Yes, it is curved both ways, but the peak/valley (very corner of the screen, to the middle) difference is about 3 mm. If you eye it carefully, the vertical curve is somewhat visible than the horizontal. Remember that the total veiwing area of my CTX is 18" and this peak/valley difference is not that pronounced compaired to older large screen monitors.
If you would like to get a good idea, check out some of the electronic/computer stores that have 19" monitors. Unless there has been changes with the Hitachi picture tube, I think some of the low to mid range models would work. -phosphor |

I've got a 19inch Hitachi that I am very pleased with. It makes my old monitor look like a fishbowl. ErgoFlat technology and virtually no glare.

I've had 2 Hitachi 751's and a Hitachi 715 (?). The 715 is actually the replacement for the 751, and seems to be the same thing, but with different OSD. All 3 monitors still work fine after 2 or 3 years.
The dot pitch is good, but I really can't say much about the quality of the picture. I'm not thrilled with the picture, but for a sub $300 monitor, I'd buy one again.
