The Opteron prototypes/samples are already out, but they're only running at 800 MHz.

To a few people's surprise, AMD annouced the Athlon XP 2400+ and the Athlon XP 2600+, today!
There's speculation that the next one, Athlon XP 2700+ will have the Barton core, with 512kb Level 2 cache, 333 FSB, and maybe even another surprise! Last edited by bigben2k; 08-21-2002 at 04:51 PM. |

I was having lunch yesterday with the regional Dell Systems Consultant ( guy who specs out our server rigs at the state). I was asking him about Dell and AMD.
he said "Dell knows whats hot and whats not, and one thing they know for sure is AMD in a server is not hot at all, Intel is where the confidence is. it may be cheaper to get an AMD, but for a few bucks more, getting a Xeon is just so much more soothing to our customers" I agree with his apprasial of the situation... I wouldnt buy a server for my enterprise network here at the State data center with AMD chips in it ( at this point in the game atleast)... AMD's not a stable company compared to Intel. For my machines? AMD are just fine! I dig AMD's good's... just not in the servers that run a few thousand nodes.

They build us up a month-6 weeks before we can get our hands on these, and I for one, find myself wanting one. If the retail pieces start rolling out in September, let's say the 2nd week, it will be at least the 2nd week of October before it'll hit the shelves of any stores I deal with. (2100+ is the top retail piece around here right now, with 2200+ 'coming soon') By mid-late October likely, the 2800+, with 512KB L2 (and 166 fsb?) will be making it's "launch", and I'll be saying hold on...I'm not going to buy the 2600+, when the new one is coming out now... |
