You can't put the probe ON the core, but you can press it against the side of the core, if your HSF (or waterblock) leaves you a good enough gap. Don't mess with it though, if the probe lifts the block, it'll fry your CPU!
The core idea works, but has lots of variables, because you're never sure if the probe is touching the core, especially if the probe wires have tugged the probe away a little bit. The under-core idea works very well, it's much more reliable, but there's a delay between the core heating up, and the probe picking it up. Also, because the probe is so far away, there is an offset, where the probe will read a cooler temp than the actual core temp. BIOS compensate for this with a little math. That's about all I've got... |

I use a front panel monitor similar to the digi doc.... the thermistors are very flat and very thin, so I simply superglued the sensor assembly to the surface of the chip with the very tip of the thermistor touching the side of the core.
I suggest you mount the sensor and hold the heatsink and the chip together compressing the pads and make sure the core contact is good before you mount it and fire it up. My sensor reports chip temps around 40-50c while my onboard monitoring (MBM) reports temps of 32-40c. I tend to beleive the thermistor I installed is much more accurate. ![]()
