another pic minus the fan showing the synthetic shamios material woven inbetween the copper pins, this material leaches up the water held in the small res and is evaporated by the fan. With my 1.8a at 2.54 1.7v this is only 3 degrees worse at idle than my normal water cooling, and around 7 degrees worse under load.

Compared to the same heatsink "dry", the wet version is around 7 degrees better under load, the dry version reaching 49 degrees (20 degree ambient) and the wet reaching 42 (my "conventional" water cooling get's around 35 at the same ambient)

Note, the 8cm fan is an "average" medium speed fan, not a delta or anything.

Wouldn't it need to be constantly fed some water?

thats pretty cool (no pun intended). don't you have to keep filling the res?

Basically the bottom of the heatsink is a small copper container that holds about 100ml of water, the copper pins rise out of this and the middle group of pins have the water absorbing material woven around them, the material soaks up the water, the water is evaporated by the fan, which cools the material, which cools the pins it's woven around, which eventually cools the cpu (:.

It's terribly impractical, since it needs a horozontal mobo , and it chews through the water like nothing else, I need to re-fill it every hour or so (though it still cools adequetly when dry if the cpu is only idling)

It was quite an interesting experiment never the less.

You could tap into a waterline, and have an automatically refilling res.

The problem tough is similar to bongs: it'll raise the humidity of the room. I don't know about you, but where I live, 98% humidity is a daily fact (without any rain, thank you!), and I struggle to maintain 50% humidity in the house. I'd have to have an external exhaust.

Good work though, very creative!

I agree, very creative indeed. Hows about an evap waterblock with a pump working to circulate water through a "bong block" and an external bong?

You know that cheap automatic watering plants systems used to water the plants in the house while you are on vacation or something? That would prolong the periods of adding water and still portable!

You could set it up with a huge frickin' res under your desk with a weak pump, like from a windshield washer from your car, and have it constantly pumping small amounts of water through a larger version of that block. Theoretically, with a 10gal (like a big ice chest) cooler, you could go for days with your onboard bong block. Just a thought. Quite the unique idea, though I still would shy away from putting an open container of water on my mobo.

you could use a gerbil water dropper to keep the thing moist, but you would still have to refill it quite often.
